The therapist plays a crucial role in a client’s recovery journey by creating individualized treatment plans and collaborating with a team to support holistic goals. A therapist is responsible for providing individual and group therapy during the client’s mental health or substance abuse treatment. A therapist will have an assigned caseload and will be responsible for one-on-one sessions to ensure clients explore the root causes, understand patterns of behavior, and develop coping strategies. A therapist will also provide group sessions for the general census. The ultimate goal is to assist clients in recognizing their behavioral illness and to motivate clients to actively participate in their own recovery and treatment process, assisting them with learning skills, and gain knowledge to improve their lives. The therapist designs and manages all clinical aspects of the treatment program in accordance with state and JCAHO standards. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Individual Therapy
Builds strong, supportive therapeutic relationships using diverse modalities such as CBT, DBT, and MI. Integrates trauma-informed care to support clients through avoidance and resistance, focusing on their holistic needs. Collect information about clients, using techniques such as assessments, tests, interviews, discussions, and observations. Adapts interventions based on clients’ progress and challenges, ensuring they are engaged and making meaningful progress. Holds clients accountable while providing emotional support and empathy. Develops individualized treatment plans with clear, measurable goals that align with the client’s needs. Applies various therapeutic approaches effectively, refining strategies and evaluation based on ongoing assessment. Incorporates client history and potential barriers into treatment planning for long-term recovery. Regularly adapts treatment plans to align with clients' changing needs and progress. Tracks and documents client behavior, progress, and any obstacles to treatment. All charts, program documentation, medication management, incident reports and other forms/reports are completed in a timely (within 72 hours of provided service), objective (behavioral observations are recorded accurately), thorough, and legible manner. Maintains high documentation standards, reflecting clinical rationale for treatment decisions and supporting treatment authorizations. Effectively manages crises with minimal supervision, remaining calm and focused during high-stress situations. Proactively addresses potential crises, offering clients appropriate resources and support. Acts as a client advocate to coordinate required services to resolve emergency problems in crisis situations. Group Therapy
Leads and facilitates engaging group therapy sessions, building a strong community among participants. Identifies when clients need additional support to engage deeply and fosters a safe, respectful environment. Maintains strong attendance and participation by adapting group dynamics and content to meet diverse client needs. Uses a variety of methodologies, including psycho-educational, skills development, CBT, DBT, support, and interpersonal process groups. Develops and leads creative, effective group content that aligns with clients' therapeutic goals. Confidently facilitates specialized groups (e.g., grief, trauma), integrating evidence-based interventions. Continuously refines group content, developing original materials and curricula. Consistently manages groups effectively, adapting quickly to challenges. Uses crisis moments in group settings as learning opportunities, fostering collaboration and trust. Models professional group leadership, ensuring a balanced and focused atmosphere. Submits comprehensive, well-detailed notes that capture key insights and client progress. Utilizes advanced documentation techniques, following the GIRP format for accurate client progress tracking. Notes reflect both group dynamics and individual client needs, supporting ongoing treatment planning and collaboration with the team. Professional Skills
Actively collaborates with all staff and contributes to clinical team meetings, sharing insights and collaborating with colleagues across disciplines. Provides constructive feedback and seeks collaboration to ensure comprehensive client care. Seeks guidance when necessary but takes initiative to resolve issues independently. Maintains a positive and professional relationship with clients, staff, physicians, visitors, and other staff. Fosters a positive, inclusive team environment, ensuring all members feel supported and valued. Demonstrates the highest ethical standards in client interactions, setting clear boundaries and maintaining professional relationships. Upholds the organization's values, reflecting its culture in all interactions with clients and team members. Encourages clients to foster a sense of community and peer support outside of therapy sessions. Exercise awareness in cultural competency, client satisfaction, quality of services, client needs, and overall health and safety of staff and clients. Exhibits exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, ensuring clarity and professionalism in all exchanges. Adapts communication style to different audiences, ensuring that communication is timely and effective. Demonstrates strong organizational skills in managing emails, documentation, and communications. Independently meets all administrative requirements, efficiently managing caseloads, schedules, and documentation. Maintains confidentiality of records relating to client’s treatment. Proficient in using clinical software and electronic health records (EHR) for documentation, scheduling, and client management. Demonstrates strong technical skills, troubleshooting issues and assisting colleagues when necessary. Qualification Requirements
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, supervisors, utilization reviews, managed health care clinicians, and medical and mental health professionals. Ability to positively interact and develop rapport with clients and their families. Ability to maintain a culture of care conducive to maximum benefit of clients and staff. Education and Experience
Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field (required). Registered as an Associate or Licensed: Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC or LPCC), Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT or LMFT), or Clinical Social Worker (ACSW or LCSW) with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). Maintain active license and documenting supervised hours towards licensure. Proficiency in MS Office Suite and basic operational computer skills. Physical Requirements
Ability to sit for extended periods while conducting therapy sessions, writing progress notes, and completing required documentation. Occasional standing, walking, or moving between offices, therapy rooms, and meeting areas. Ability to move freely to interact with clients in various settings. Regular use of hands for writing, typing, and handling documents or therapy tools. Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 20 lbs, such as files, therapy materials, or supplies.
