Cytology Manager Yosemite Pathology (YP) is a private independent pathologist owned and operated surgical pathology and cytology laboratory based in Modesto, CA. YP provides comprehensive state of the art, reliable, and accurate diagnostic services to its physicians and major area hospitals in the Alameda, Amador, Calaveras, Contra Costa, Kern, Mariposa, Merced, San Joaquin, Solano, Stanislaus and Tuolumne counties. YP offers a full spectrum of tissue pathology, cytology and histology services, including examination of gynecologic specimens, body fluids and fine needle aspiration specimens. We also offer an extensive array of special stains and immunohistochemistry to assist in the management of oncologic and non-oncologic diseases. The laboratory is supported by highly qualified Histotechnologist, Cytotechnologist, Technicians and office staff who offer excellent service. Summary/Objective
The Cytologist is expected to function independently with minimal supervision, is held accountable to maintain and promote trust, and positively interacts with physicians, patients and other employees. This person will participate in Quality Control and quality improvement activities, assists in activities for achieving accreditation and corporate compliance for Cytology, and maintains proficiency in all aspects of performance of a Cytologist. Essential Functions
Perform
Rapid On-Site Evaluation (ROSE)
of cytology specimens obtained during bronchoscopy procedures (e.g., transbronchial needle aspiration, brushings, lavage). Facilitate
immediate decision-making
during procedures to minimize the need for repeat bronchoscopies and enhance diagnostic accuracy Perform fine needle aspiration procedures Remain
on call
for scheduled bronchoscopy sessions, responding promptly to procedural needs and ensuring timely diagnostic support. This role is strictly non-diagnostic and involves
specimen handling , coordination with the clinical team, and maintaining best practices for
sample collection and transport . Help monitor and log procedural documentation related to cytology involvement Communicates professionally, courteously, effectively and accurately with internal and external staff, clients, physicians with an emphasis on SBAR system communication. Actively promotes positive communications that enhance teamwork. Maintaining & recording laboratory equipment preventative maintenance. Collaborate with other departments, colleagues, and clients in problem solving. Perform troubleshooting specimen/test order problems and notifying management if applicable. Participating in work-related educational seminars, surveys, in-services (CAP, ASCP; MediaLab). Maximizing the highest quality performance and productivity throughout shift Must complete all assignments with minimal supervision. Ensure all work is performed properly and in a timely manner and Turn-around-time goals are met. Job Requirements and Skills
2 - 4 years of Cytology experience ASCP certified Intermediate computer skills Strong communication skills, verbal and written Work Environment
This position operates in a laboratory environment and involves frequent standing and exposure to hazardous chemicals and biohazardous materials. Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
