Overview

The Deputy Chief of Staff for Hospital Services functions as a key member of the executive leadership team - actively participating in the development of overall management objectives and philosophies necessary for the attainment of optimum efficiency in providing health care to our Veteran population. The incumbent is accountable to the Chief of Staff and Medical Center Director for the coordination of clinical activities - clinical staff - and administrative oversight. Qualifications

To qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) - b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) -OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) - which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs) PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. - not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged rather - they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision Additionally - surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs Proficiency in spoken and written English Reference: For more information on this qualification standard - please visit https://www.va.gov/ohrm/QualificationStandards/ Physical Requirements: Requires lifting 15-44 pounds, pushing (approx 2 hours), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers and both hands, walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4 Far visions correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors Hearing aid is permitted Duties and Responsibilities

Monitor and ensure medical staff compliance with agency regulations - medical staff bylaws - health care system policies - The Joint Commission (TJC) standards - CARF - LTCl - CAP - AABB and other appropriate regulations Provide leadership oversight in compliance with other federal agencies such as the Office of Inspector General (OIG) and the Office of the Medical Inspector (OMI) Possess broad knowledge of health care policies, missions, and operating programs, with extensive knowledge of health care management Develop and maintain good working relationships with affiliates and promote professional development of all health care staff Promote standards of clinical competence and conduct through credentialing and privileging processes, monitoring and evaluation of clinical practices, peer review, and quality improvement activities Oversee medical staff functions to support organizational efficiency and safety through oversight of the medical center inter-health care system transfer process Promote the development of health care professionals through counseling, mentoring, teaching, and encouraging self-assessment Promote an environment that supports patient care, educational activity, and administrative planning and evaluation based on current knowledge Inform health care system employees and VA components in a timely manner about clinical program developments Act as a management team member, providing advice in defining and achieving the health care system\'s mission and goals Lead the clinical staff to achieve the health care system mission and goals Represent the organization internally and externally to reflect positively on the health care system and VA Serve as a professional liaison to other VA and federal facilities, the community, affiliates, media, congressional offices, and constituent organizations Maintain high ethical and clinical standards in decision making Foster constructive problem resolution amid competing priorities Work with the Executive Leadership team to ensure health care system programs reflect VHA and VA priorities Evaluate current and potential patient population needs, clinical workload and resources, and cost/benefit analyses to promote effective clinical programs; advise the Health Care System Director and implement approved proposals Provide leadership to staff through policy guidance and activities on behalf of patients and their clinical care Promote credentialing and privileging processes, monitor clinical practices, and prioritize quality improvement activities Assess education and development needs of clinical staff and plan and prioritize training funds Preferred Experience: Board Certified or eligible for Board Certification in their area of expertise Work Schedule: Monday through Friday - 7:30am - 4:00pm Benefits and Additional Information
