The Attending Veterinarian has overall responsibility for research animal care and provides guidance in establishing and implementing policies and procedures in compliance with USDA and GLP regulations, AAALAC International, and other policies related to laboratory animals care and use. This position will also be expected to serve as Study Director on assigned studies.
What you will be doing?
Serve as mentor to others in understanding the requirements for maintaining research with animals and the rules and regulations governing such
Prepare reports and regulatory documents
Make recommendations to management on possible capital expenditures to maintain the welfare of experimental animals
Represent Attentive Science in a professional manner in meetings with sponsors and regulatory authorities
Perform diagnostic procedures and prescribe appropriate treatment if an animal is injured or ill
Perform and oversee surgical procedures
Ability to serve as the study director for client studies
Ensure scientific and technical soundness of study design and proposed conduct
Monitor progress and status of assigned studies to ensure all experimental data, including observations of unanticipated responses of the test system, are accurately recorded and verified
Advise colleagues on the proper use of methods to relieve or reduce pain and distress
Perform specialty procedures as needed
Participate in the IACUC committee
Perform preventive medicine
Perform release for study, and physical examinations of facility animals
Participate in necropsies as required
Provide required documentation of veterinarian activities
Perform other duties as needed
The Requirements of the Position
The Attending Clinical Veterinarian/Surgeon should possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M. or equivalent) degree, with professional training in the biological sciences. Candidates should also have specialized training and/or experience in Laboratory Animal Medicine, as well as additional training or relevant experience in a research or industrial setting. Qualifications will be evaluated based on a combination of education and experience, as determined by management.
