Responsibilities

  • Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs equipment and machinery using a variety of tools including: scan tools, multi-meters, and emission test equipment.
  • Inspects, diagnoses and repairs gasoline and diesel-powered equipment.
  • Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs equipment and heavy-duty road machinery; prepares orders lists; records materials used and time spent.
  • Makes parts order lists, records materials used, time spent, and repairs made.
  • Repairs suspension, differentials, transmission, engine, and other mechanical systems for the County's rolling stock of cars, trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Overhauls engines, drive trains, transmissions, brakes, air conditioning, diesel fueled road machinery and other systems.
  • Repairs hydraulic and electrical systems.
  • Diagnoses malfunctions in vehicles' electrical systems and performs required repairs.
  • Performs metal and/or fiberglass body damage repairs to vehicles, machinery and equipment.
  • Operates tow trucks and forklifts.
  • Performs oxyacetylene welding as needed.
  • Maintains, repairs and replaces tires and wheels, aligns front ends and performs front end repair work.
  • Monitors and accounts for the seasonal vehicle and the daily rental vehicle usage.
  • Perform the end of the month billing for daily and/or seasonal Motor Pool usage.
  • Maintains vehicle and stock control inventory for Motor Pool operations.
  • Maintains daily usage of ER&R leased vehicles.
  • Performs daily distribution of Motor Pool vehicles and distribution of seasonal vehicles.
  • Maintains, cleans, services, renovates, and fuels vehicles and ensures that vehicles are operational.
  • Monitors leased vehicle prevention maintenance schedules.
  • Keeps shop and work station clean and tidy.
  • Performs basic building maintenance.
  • Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Three (3) years working at a journeyman level in a commercial fleet maintenance and tire repair occupation -or- completion of a recognized mechanical apprentice program or an equivalent training program and two (2) years of journey level work experience on gasoline and diesel trucks, cars and equipment.
  • Possession of a valid Class "A" CDL driver's license with tanker endorsement preferred or must be obtained within twelve (12) months of hire.
  • Knowledge and skill in performing mechanical maintenance and repairs on gasoline operated light trucks, cars, and equipment.
  • Knowledge and skill in performing mechanical maintenance and repairs on gas and diesel heavy duty road machinery and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the proper use and care of specialized mechanical repair tools and equipment and the associated professional occupational hazards.
  • Skilled in communicating effectively both orally and in writing, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.
  • Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, the general public and County departments.
  • Skilled in performing and operating basic computer applications including "Windows" based programs and e-mail.
  • Ability to correctly diagnose problems in gas and diesel equipment and machinery; and safely, skillfully and successfully perform repair work on such machinery and equipment.
  • Ability to operate equipment and vehicles in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting and prolonged physical labor.
  • Ability to read and interpret repair manuals, and drawings and sketches of mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Ability to gas weld and braze with various equipment.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to work intricately with other employees.
  • Ability to handle routine basic accounting procedures and functions quickly and accurately.
