Yard Waste Maintenance Worker – City of Champaign Public Works Department

The City of Champaign is hiring Yard Waste Maintenance Workers to support the city’s yard waste collection program, perform forestry section support tasks, participate in snow & ice removal, and respond to emergencies. Positions may be filled at the Maintenance Worker I or II level. Level II positions require the ability to operate Public Works equipment without supervision. Newly hired or current employees promoted to a Maintenance Worker position will be paid at the Maintenance Worker I level until they demonstrate equipment operation competency.

Responsibilities

  • Collect yard waste bags, bundles, and brush along city streets during collection periods.
  • Perform forestry section support tasks such as planting, watering, fertilizing, spreading mulch, installing sod, cleaning sidewalks and hardscapes, assisting with stump grinding, and maintaining tree inventories.
  • Participate in the city’s snow & ice removal efforts and respond to other emergencies, call‑outs, and stand‑by duties requiring 12‑ to 16‑hour shifts at all hours with little to no advance notice.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Physical agility to perform essential functions; ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures and adverse weather conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Class B CDL with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction.
  • Forklift certification.
  • Public Operator Pesticide License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a yard waste or similar collection program.
  • Experience with snow and ice removal.
  • Ground support experience in tree care operations.
  • Experience with landscape or turf maintenance.

Other Information

Salary range: $28.8101 - $37.9677 per hour, not including longevity and depending on current rate of pay.
