Chief Information Officer and Vice President for Integrated Technologies
THE OPPORTUNITY Empire State University, SUNY's leading online institution and New York state's only public online university, is searching for a results‑oriented, collaborative, and innovative Chief Information Officer and Vice President for Integrated Technologies (CIO and VP). The new leader will build on the unique brand identity of New York's first and only online public university in service to a diverse and growing student population. The CIO will enable technology‑driven efficiency and innovation across the university, partnering with the President’s cabinet to drive the strategic plan, Elevate 28.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a balance of technical expertise, outcomes‑driven accountability, and leadership savvy. The CIO is charged with defining and implementing strategic initiatives that align with the institution's mission, vision, and strategic plan. The individual must be knowledgeable about online teaching and learning and possess strong interpersonal and communication skills to navigate a complex educational environment. Collaboration and organizational effectiveness will be key, as the CIO must articulate and implement a shared vision for integrated technology across the university.
The CIO and VP will lead ITS and oversee the entire IT infrastructure to support the mission, vision, and priorities. This includes advocacy for technology to support the university, leadership in the effective use of technology for teaching and learning, and reinforcement of business process architecture. The position leads a staff of about 60 and manages a current budget of $6.6 million, maintaining high standards in project management, communications, and outcome assessment while fostering an environment of creativity and evaluation. The Office of Integrated Technologies covers academic technologies, administrative systems, hyperconverged networking, cybersecurity, project management, training, and user support. The CIO collaborates closely with stakeholders across SUNY Empire, including Academic Affairs, Administration and Finance, Communications, and Enrollment Management and Marketing. Additional duties include leadership in administrative process automation and innovation in technology use to promote teaching, learning, scholarship, and research.
LOCATION SUNY Empire serves 17,500 students across New York and beyond. While faculty and staff are located worldwide, the administrative offices are in beautiful Saratoga Springs, New York. The town offers walkable streets, restaurants, cafes, bookstores, and cultural attractions. The region boasts lakes, forests, and nearby Adirondacks, with Albany, New York City, Boston, and Montreal within a 3.5‑hour drive.
Job Requirements Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
At least eight (8) years of progressive information technology experience
At least five (5) years of leadership and/or management experience across functional teams in a complex organization
Demonstrated knowledge of AI systems and tools
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse constituencies and build consensus
Demonstration of strong technical background to oversee a complex division at an online university
Effective communication skills that translate technically complex concepts into understandable language
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree from an accredited college or university
Demonstrated success working in the education sector
Experience with multi‑site interconnected networked environments
Demonstrated success working in the public sector
Additional Information Salary: $225,000 – $245,000
