Residential Counselor (All Shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overnights)
Reports to: Program Manager.
General Description: Provide coverage in residential program for adults with severe and persistent mental illness. Residential counselors help facilitate residents’ adaptation to community living by providing guidance and hands‑on assistance in accordance with a recovery‑based system of care.
Responsibilities
Monitor and supervise adults in a group environment. Provide supportive services, teach independent living skills, and conduct crisis intervention as necessary. Stay up‑to‑date on all resident issues.
Coordinate and supervise residents in completing routine household activities/tasks (e.g., meal preparation, housekeeping, laundry, etc.), offering hands‑on assistance and teaching as needed.
Provide instruction and guidance in developing ADL skills (e.g., budgeting, personal hygiene, nutrition & wellness, social time, etc.).
Develop and conduct rehabilitative‑oriented groups for residents.
For the Milbank program: facilitate and co‑facilitate groups to fulfill 40 hours per month per client of group and one‑to‑one work concentrating on intense ADL, social, and psychological rehabilitation.
Monitor residents’ self‑administration of medication.
Document significant behavioral observations in Pathways’ Electronic Health Record, prepare written reports as necessary, and report all unusual behaviors to the social worker and program manager. Document all resident contact and collateral contacts.
Encourage residents’ attendance at planned activities (day program, jobs, events, etc.).
Conduct and document fire and functional drills, report repairs, and replenish household supplies.
Participate in staff meetings, in‑service trainings, Relias trainings, case conferences, and other meetings as required.
Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and municipal regulations pertaining to program operation.
Assist with appointments and counseling as necessary.
Other duties and special projects as assigned.
Provide transportation to/from the day program and appointments as needed.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of basic principles of human development and psychopathology.
Ability and interest in teaching, coaching and prompting the development of basic independent living skills.
Basic understanding of empathy for the needs of individuals with mental illness.
Knowledge of basic first aid, crisis intervention, and emergency action principles.
Computer skills: knowledge of Microsoft Word, internet, cloud‑based applications, and tablet‑based applications.
Ability to document timely and accurately in an Electronic Health Record system.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of information.
Ability to work second and/or third shifts, including weekends and holidays as needed.
Shift availability: Monday‑Friday 2 pm–11 pm, Saturday/Sunday 9 am–4 pm, 4 pm–11 pm; overnights Monday‑Sunday 11 pm–9 am.
Interest in collaborating and working in a team environment.
Qualifications
1–2 years of work experience in the mental health field; an associate’s, bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related field is preferred.
Experience in residential programs is a plus.
Valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and use of a company car during work.
Pay: Starting at $20 per hour, commensurate with experience.
