Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist to join our dynamic team at Musgrove Park Hospital.
This is a full-time (10 PA) substantive post offering a broad generalist role within a well-established department that delivers high-quality care across a wide range of specialist services.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to both obstetric and gynaecological services, including elective and emergency care, outpatient clinics, and theatre sessions.
Joining a supportive team of 12 consultants, you will be working Monday to Friday (full shift) and participate in a 1:12 on-call rota and as per agreed Job Plan.
Main duties of the job Provide high-quality obstetric and gynaecological care across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings.
Participate in the 1:12 on-call rota, including twice-daily consultant-led ward rounds on Labour Ward.
Lead and support general antenatal and gynaecology clinics, elective caesarean lists, and minor procedure sessions.
Contribute to departmental teaching, supervision, and appraisal of junior doctors.
Engage in clinical governance, audit, and service development.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure integrated, patient-centred care.
Participate in research and quality improvement initiatives.

Job responsibilities The Obstetrics and Gynaecology department at Musgrove Park Hospital provides comprehensive care to a diverse population across Somerset. The team includes consultants with subspecialist interests in maternal medicine, Fetal surveillance, diabetes and endocrinology, perinatal mental health, chronic pelvic pain, endometriosis, urogynaecology, and gynaecological oncology. The department is home to a BSGE-accredited endometriosis centre and runs specialist clinics such as preterm birth, twin pregnancy, and rapid access cancer assessment. Facilities include a modern delivery suite, dedicated theatres, a neonatal intensive care unit, and outpatient services across hospital and community sites.
Person Specification Qualifications
MBBS or equivalent Medical Degree
Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
Relevant CCT or equivalent (or within 6 months of applying)
Specialist Registration or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of applying
MSc. or equivalent
Higher qualification in medical education
Experience
Experience in general obstetrics and gynaecology Understanding of clinical risk management Experience in advanced labour ward and benign gynaecology ASTM or equivalent SITM Research experience and publication record Experience in service development or guideline implementation
