Consultant Obstetrician High Risk Obstetrics & Fetal Monitoring Lead
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a passionate and forward-thinking Consultant Obstetrician to join our expanding team at Musgrove Park Hospital. This new post has been created to strengthen our high-risk obstetric service and support the development of a dedicated elective caesarean section team. The successful candidate will have a specialist interest in high-risk obstetrics and Fetal surveillance, with the skills to perform growth scans and Doppler assessments for small-for-gestational-age babies. You will also provide cross-site leadership as the Obstetric Fetal monitoring, lead supporting training, compliance, and quality improvement across Musgrove Park and Yeovil District Hospitals. This is an obstetrics-only role with no gynaecology commitments, offering the opportunity to work within a highly collaborative and inclusive team delivering near-tertiary level care in a district general hospital setting. This is a full time (10 PAs), permanent post, working Monday to Thursday, with a 1:12 on call requirement (Friday/Saturday/Sunday) and as per agreed Job Plan. Main duties of the job
The Obstetrics and Gynaecology department at Musgrove Park Hospital provides comprehensive care to a diverse population across Somerset. The team includes consultants with subspecialist interests in maternal medicine, fetal medicine, diabetes and endocrinology, perinatal mental health. We run several specialist joint clinics, including epilepsy, haematology, and bariatric pregnancy care, and are one of the few district general hospitals with a Twins Trust-accredited twin clinic and a joint perinatal mental health clinic. Our facilities include a modern delivery suite, dedicated obstetric theatre, level 2 neonatal intensive care unit, and a midwife-led birthing centre. We also host a cross-site quality and learning forum and have recently restructured our governance model to support continuous improvement. About us

Provide high-quality obstetric care across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings. Lead Fetal monitoring across both hospital sites, supporting training, compliance, and service development. Perform Fetal growth scans and Doppler assessments for SGA and growth restricted babies. Run a weekly scan clinic and a fortnightly high-risk antenatal clinic. Cover elective caesarean section lists and triage sessions. Participate in the obstetric-only on-call rota (1:12), including twice-daily consultant-led ward rounds. Supervise and support junior doctors, contributing to teaching and appraisal. Engage in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and contribute to research and service innovation. Person Specification
Qualifications
MBBS or equivalent Medical Degree Full GMC registration with a licence to practice Relevant CCT in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (or within 6 months of applying) Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months applying MSc or equivalent higher qualification SITIM or equivalent in maternal medicine or high-risk Fetal care Higher qualification in medical education Experience
Experience in high-risk obstetrics and managing pregnancies with pre-existing medical conditions Competence in Fetal growth scanning and Doppler assessments Understanding of clinical risk management and evidence-based practice SITIM or equivalent in maternal medicine or high-risk fetal care Experience in labour ward leadership or advanced labour ward practice Research experience and publication record Experience in guideline development and service innovation Additional Criteria
