Job Summary
Under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides age-appropriate direct patient care in pediatric units, including neonates through adolescents. The LPN supports the nursing process, contributes to patient assessments, administers treatments and medications, and assists with patient education. The LPN is expected to work collaboratively within the healthcare team and uphold high standards of pediatric care and safety.
Essential Functions
Collect and report patient data to support RN assessments and planning
Deliver direct patient care, including hygiene, feeding, ambulation, and wound care
Administer prescribed medications and treatments under RN delegation
Accurately document care and patient responses in the medical record
Assist in development and implementation of care plans
Maintain infection control and aseptic techniques
Communicate with patients, families, and the healthcare team respectfully and effectively
Promote patient and family education related to diagnoses and treatment
Ensure a safe and supportive environment tailored to pediatric patients
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations
Strong critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills
Ability to work in high-stress and emotionally sensitive pediatric environments
Familiarity with pediatric medical equipment and electronic documentation
Respect for cultural, spiritual, and developmental needs of children and families
Commitment to ethical conduct and patient confidentiality (HIPAA compliance)
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and assist with patient movement
Willingness to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays
Participation in continuous quality improvement and professional development
Education
Graduate of an accredited practical nursing program
Licenses/Certifications
Current LPN license in the state of practice
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required)
Experience
Previous pediatric nursing experience preferred
Must demonstrate competence in providing care across pediatric age groups
