Substation Maintenance Engineer
– OGE Energy Corp.
Job Summary Acts as a company subject matter expert for substation power equipment, providing technical expertise and support for the evaluation, acceptance testing, commissioning, maintenance, and operation of substation power equipment. Develops plans and specifications, performs analysis, and provides reports on assigned tasks involving design and construction of new facilities or operation and maintenance of existing facilities. Technically involved in the resolution of equipment and operational problems that may include performing field investigations or inspections, performing design work, and detailed checking of design computations done by others.
Responsibilities
Develop equipment specifications, perform factory inspections and certification, and support equipment factory acceptance testing (FAT).
Develop power equipment test plans and procedures, review equipment test results, and support power equipment commissioning, operations, and maintenance.
Provide on‑site and remote support to field personnel during routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and equipment repairs; lead and perform root cause analysis of failed in‑service equipment and misoperations.
Ensure safe operation of power equipment by interpreting test results and recommending corrective actions.
Develop technical procedures and guidelines used by Substation Operations, Power Equipment Service Center, and contractors.
Represent the company in standards development, regulatory, and manufacturer working groups.
Provide on‑job training to new staff.
Manage multiple projects, budgets, schedules, and resources.
Serve as quality inspector or define quality requirements on engineering designs and projects.
Ensure all design specifications conform to the latest national and local codes, rules, and regulations.
Review and critique proposed changes to engineering standards, policies, and guidelines.
Conduct field surveys to gather data.
Prepare and interpret schematics, drawings, layouts, and other visual aids.
Perform preliminary engineering analysis, life‑cycle cost evaluation, and equipment selection for small or routine projects.
Assist senior engineers as directed while developing specialized engineering skills.
Support company safety programs and initiatives by following all EHS and operating procedures and adhering to design standards.
Work with power equipment manufacturers to identify issues and develop technical solutions related to equipment failures, defects, and operational concerns.
Support the installation and development of substation monitoring equipment.
Perform all other duties as assigned.
Requirements Staff Level
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (or PE) and 2 years of related engineering experience (half‑rate credit for internships, drafting, or other non‑engineering experience).
Senior Level
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (or PE) and 5 years of related engineering experience (minimum 3 years as an engineer and up to 2 years of non‑engineering experience, half‑rate credit for internships, drafting, or other non‑engineering experience).
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with factory acceptance testing of substation power equipment (transformers, breakers, etc.).
Experience with commissioning of substation power equipment.
Experience with operation and maintenance of substation power equipment.
Experience with in‑service and off‑line diagnostic testing of substation power equipment to assess equipment health.
Experience with Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA), Sweep Frequency Analysis (SFRA), and Partial Discharge (PD) testing.
Work Conditions
May be exposed to extreme weather conditions.
May be required to work at heights up to and exceeding 30 feet, underground, and in confined spaces.
May require travel (including domestic and international).
May be required to work non‑standard work schedules.
