Responsibilities
Safety: Set expectations to maintain a safe and organized workplace. Lead by example, ensure environmental compliance, hold safety talks with personnel as needed, make daily observations, and conduct Safety and Housekeeping Audits.
Coordinate melt department operations with Melt Supervisors.
Assist Melt Supervisors with RMSB charge coordination, raw materials inventory, chemistry control and corrections, and melt processes, as required in the Melt Manager’s absence (Melt Managers are Primary).
Be on call to assist with melt chemistry excursions.
Optimize alloy transitions in process to improve yield and quality.
Assist in sourcing and evaluating raw material suppliers to ensure they meet quality and compliance standards.
Maintain the melt webpage with all required communications to support 24-hour plant operations.
Write, review, and update procedures, work instructions, and forms within the ISO 9000 QC system and Melt Intranet for melting all alloys.
Actively participate in the quality process, including the resolution of CARS.
Arrange and lead or assist Melt Managers in all melt X-trials, collect experimental data and samples, compile and interpret results.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Key Success Factors
Assist in communicating performance expectations, including safe work practices, to all melt personnel.
Drive webpage initiatives in melt areas to streamline communication and reporting.
Solicit feedback from plant personnel on process improvement opportunities (yields, procedures, methods, etc.).
Continuously monitor and revise ISO documents for the melt area as required.
Collaborate effectively with other crew leaders to meet casting production and quality objectives.
Work closely with engineers and metallurgists to execute trials and implement process improvements.
Attributes / Skills Required
Strong communication skills with the ability to interact across all levels of plant personnel.
Excellent written, oral, and listening skills.
Proven ability to serve as a change agent—continuously seeking new ideas and methods to achieve goals.
Self-starter with strong problem-solving and multitasking abilities.
Advanced computer proficiency, especially in Microsoft Office applications.
Ability to follow through with minimal supervision and maintain accountability.
Comfortable spending at least 60% of the time on the plant floor.
Skilled in creating and delivering PowerPoint presentations to leadership and plant staff.
Willingness and ability to perform hands‑on work as needed to ensure department success.
Experience / Education Required
BS degree in Metallurgical or Materials Science.
Strong organizational ability.
Proficient user of MS Excel and PowerPoint.
Minimum of 5 years of related manufacturing experience.
Proven Metallurgist background with refractory and induction melting experience.
Experience working cross-functionally with R&D, Quality, Procurement, and other departments.
Familiarity with Phase Diagrams and related metallurgical principles.
