Tax Managing Director, Private Client Services BDO is a boutique practice providing high‑touch tax and financial services to high net‑worth individuals, their families, family offices, C‑Suite executives, athletes, entertainers, and other clients with complex tax structures.

The Private Client Services practice has deep expertise in estate, income, gift, and trust tax consulting and compliance; charitable giving and philanthropic foundations; executive compensation; and cash‑flow, retirement, and life insurance planning.

Job Summary A Tax Managing Director (TMD) is responsible for leading tax and consulting engagements, delivering executive presence, and serving as the primary client contact.

The TMD guides the team through complex individual, trust, estate, S‑Corp, foundation, partnership, and gift‑tax returns, conducts advanced tax research, and provides strategic recommendations.

The role is integral to the office/region leadership team and requires strong communication, technical, business development, people, and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

Lead tax and consulting engagements and teach team members the skills needed to identify and address client needs, tax planning, and consulting opportunities.

Act as the primary client contact for preparation, presentation, and resolution of complex tax issues.

Review complex individual, trust, estate, S‑Corp, foundation, partnership, and gift‑tax returns and provide written and verbal feedback to preparers.

Direct communication with government agencies for matters of the highest complexity.

Identify technical issues, conduct advanced tax research, and develop sound recommendations for PCS leadership, clients, and advisors.

Expand in‑depth understanding of tax concepts and knowledge through client engagements and current tax developments.

Prioritize and review work to keep engagements on track.

Utilize strong analytical, research, and critical‑thinking skills to assist with client needs related to individual and business decisions.

Assist with PCS/firm contribution responsibilities, including billing, recruiting, attendance, and participation in CPE activities and training.

Build new relationships and maintain existing relationships with BDO professionals and external sources.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise associates, senior associates, and managers as appropriate.

Review work prepared by associates and senior associates and provide review comments.

Act as a career advisor to associates, senior associates, and managers.

Schedule and manage workload of associates, senior associates, and managers.

Provide verbal and written performance feedback to associates, senior associates, and managers.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics, required.

Master’s degree in Accountancy or Taxation, preferred.

Experience

Ten (10) or more years of prior experience in accounting, finance, or law, required.

Expertise in the private client service area, required.

Prior supervisory experience, required.

Experience working in public accounting, preferred.

License/Certifications

Certified Public Accountant credential, IRS Enrolled Agent credential, Attorney (U.S. jurisdiction), or equivalent designation, required.

Other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role, preferred.

Software

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat, required.

Experience with tax compliance process software (e.g., GoSystems, BNA Tax Planner, GoFileRoom, SurePrep), preferred.

Experience with tax research tools (e.g., BNA Portfolio, CCH IntelliConnect, Checkpoint, Lexis Nexis), preferred.

Internally, part of the practice leadership group and involved in recruitment, learning, scheduling, and retention.

Technical Skills

Deep knowledge of tax issues for high net‑worth clients; expert in tax application standards.

Recommends alternatives and innovations to improve client outcomes.

Business Development

Builds a network of key decision makers, referral sources, and recruits.

Actively networks professionally outside BDO.

People Development

Supervises, develops, and trains employees.

Acts as career advisor; meets regularly with advisees.

Delivers holistic feedback and coaching for career growth.

Compensation California Range: $215,000 – $270,000 Colorado Range: $170,000 – $225,000 Illinois Range: $175,000 – $250,000 Maryland Range: $185,000 – $260,000 Massachusetts Range: $215,000 – $300,000 Minnesota Range: $170,000 – $250,000 New Jersey Range: $190,000 – $350,000 NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $230,000 – $350,000 Washington Range: $180,000 – $240,000 Washington DC Range: $190,000 – $300,000
