Program Description CCVS is a thriving 24‑hour emergency and specialty hospital with two locations—Buzzards Bay and South Dennis—serving a combined annual caseload of over 19,000 cases. Residents work with a multi‑specialty team of more than 30 veterinarians, including 25 board‑certified specialists across a wide range of disciplines.

8 full‑time and 2 part‑time Criticalists (ACVECC)
4 full‑time and 2 part‑time Surgeons (ACVS)
4 Internists (ACVIM)
1 Cardiologist (ACVIM/Cardiology)
1 Anesthesiologist (ACVAA)
1 Dermatologist (ACVD)
1 Zoological Medicine Specialist (ACZM)
Program Highlights
Primary case responsibility on high‑acuity emergency and critical care patients, under guidance of senior criticalists.
Broad surgical exposure in emergency procedures supervised by board‑certified surgeons.
Didactic and clinical teaching opportunities for interns and technical staff.
Weekly rounds, morbidity & mortality discussions, and journal club participation.
Research support: annual research fund and mentorship for first‑author manuscript publication.
Continuing education allowance and paid membership to professional associations.

Full‑service Intensive Care Units
Anesthetic and ICU ventilators
Multi‑slice helical CT scanner
Endoscopy and ER/specialty ultrasound
Continuous and 6‑lead ECG and invasive blood pressure monitoring
Full in‑house laboratories: blood gas, lactate, coagulation, viscoelastic analysis, CRP, BNP, troponin
On‑site blood bank and total parenteral nutrition capabilities
Upcoming Expansion (2027) CCVS will add a major expansion to the Buzzards Bay hospital, increasing clinical space, enhancing ICU capacity, and adding Neurology, Ophthalmology, and Dentistry services, along with new specialists to enrich cross‑disciplinary learning and research.
Living in Cape Cod Hospitals are located near beaches, sailing, kayaking, and hiking, with easy access to Boston and Providence—about an hour away—offering a balance of coastal relaxation and urban convenience.
Who Can Apply The residency welcomes applications from veterinarians who meet the following qualifications.
Educational Background
Graduate of an AVMA‑accredited or recognized veterinary college.
Graduates of non‑AVMA‑accredited schools eligible if they have passed NAVLE, PAVE, or ECFVG and are authorized to work in the United States for the duration of the program.
Experience Requirements
At least one of the following completed prior to the program start date:
One‑year rotating internship
One‑year specialty internship (preferably in Emergency and Critical Care)
One or more years of clinical practice in a small animal hospital
Licensing Requirements
Must hold, or be eligible to obtain, a Massachusetts veterinary license and DEA license before starting the program.
NAVLE is required for licensure and program entry.
