Position Overview
Role:
Mechanical Design Engineer We’re looking for a creative and committed Mechanical Design Engineer who is passionate about custom details, thrives in problem‑solving, and enjoys working on unique, multi‑faced projects from concept through installation. You’ll collaborate closely with designers, engineers, fabricators, and project managers to transform concepts into fully engineered, buildable solutions while balancing design intent, fabrication efficiency, and client expectations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership & Project Ownership
Lead projects from concept to final installation, managing all engineering phases Take full ownership of design intent, technical execution, and project deliverables Balance speed, quality, and adaptability while working in a high‑change, high‑urgency environment Design & Engineering
Convert SketchUp/AutoCAD design concepts into manufacturing‑ready shop drawings using SolidWorks Develop 3D models, sub‑assembly breakdowns, bills of materials, and CNC cut files Calculate static and dynamic loads to ensure structural integrity Design jigs, templates, and fixtures to streamline fabrication Project Estimation & Planning
Estimate material and hardware needs early in design to track anticipated costs Assist in defining fabrication methods and creating installation plans Source materials, components, and specialty hardware for custom builds Collaboration & Coordination
Work closely with designers, project engineers, fabricators, purchasing, and vendors to ensure alignment on project goals
Participate in design pass‑off reviews to eliminate waste and improve build efficiency Support teammates when needed and contribute to a collaborative, team‑first culture
Problem‑Solving & Quality Assurance
Redline shop drawings and troubleshoot issues during fabrication and installation Proactively identify roadblocks, delays, and design conflicts and communicate solutions early
Maintain a strong sense of urgency while delivering high‑quality, precision‑driven work Requirements
Required
Associate's Degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience 4+ years of mechanical design experience using SolidWorks Knowledge of fabrication methods, processes, and materials Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings Strong verbal and written communication skills Excellent problem‑solving abilities and attention to detail Self‑starter with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously Preferred
Experience with sheet metal and weldment design Familiarity with basic electrical design, controls, and programming Working knowledge of building codes and permitting requirements Experience in custom fabrication, specialty installations, and multi‑disciplinary projects Software Proficiency
Required:
SolidWorks, nesting software, ERP/project management systems Preferred:

Position Type: Full‑time, on‑site Location: Downtown San Diego Salary Range: $70,000 - $95,000 annually, based on experience.
