Job Overview This position provides substance use disorder services to a special population of offenders, participating in a parolee intensive treatment program operated by the department. Duties include behavioral health assessments, individual and group therapy, clinical management of offenders with mental illness, and substance abuse issues.
Responsibilities
Provide professional behavioral health services to the offender population, including formal and informal behavioral health evaluations, diagnostic assessments, and clinical interventions.
Serve as consultant for unit staff regarding assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning.
Provide clinical direction to non-clinical staff in behavioral health care and treatment of offenders.
Assure continuity of care for offenders by making appropriate referrals and providing necessary information and documentation for receiving units, facilities, or agencies.
Provide crisis intervention in conjunction with clinical standards regarding mental health professional privilege level.
Inform offenders regarding substance use treatment.
Communicate regarding complaints, problems, transfers, classifications, and offender behavioral management issues as it relates to substance use treatment.
Monitor inmate treatment and documentation to assure compliance with standards, assure continuity of care, and complete assigned tasks in compliance with overtime exempt status.
Minimum Qualifications
Current, valid Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC) credential issued by the Colorado State Board of Addiction Counselor Examiners.
One (1) year of licensed or license candidacy experience with the substance use, mental health, and/or sex offender population.
Substitutions
Valid license as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, or a Certified Addiction Specialist or Addiction Counselor Candidate will substitute for the Licensed Addiction Counselor requirement.
Applicant must still have one (1) year of licensed or license candidacy experience with the substance use, mental health and/or sex offender population.

Must possess and maintain a valid license as a Licensed Addiction Counselor.
Knowledge and thorough understanding of Substance Use Disorder treatment standards and guidelines.
Knowledge and thorough understanding of Mental Health standards and guidelines.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to read and comprehend English.
Ability to communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing.
Ability to create accessible documents and technical content following plain language guidelines.
Ability to provide direct patient care to inmates.
Must maintain required licensure.
Preferred Qualifications
Current, valid Professional Counseling License (LPC) or Clinical Social Worker License (CSW) or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT).
Experience providing mental health treatment and discharge planning with severely mentally ill and developmentally disabled populations.
Experience providing Substance Use Disorder treatment in a therapeutic community.
Experience providing Substance Use Disorder treatment to an incarcerated population.
Experience conducting suicide risk assessments.
Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Conditions of Employment
Must be 21 years of age.
Possess a valid driver’s license; maintain a safe driving record and adhere to Colorado Division of Human Resources policies.
Possess a high school diploma or GED.
No felony convictions; comply with all background check requirements.
Successfully pass all modules of the 6‑week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training.
Legally eligible to work in the United States; CDOC uses e‑Verify.
Employees who are rehired within six months receive the same pay rate; those after six months receive the higher of the new hire or previous rate.
