PARK RANGER SENIOR

Job Summary The Park Ranger Senior serves as the supervisor for day‑to‑day operations of the cave, overseeing conservation, protection, and methodology of the caverns. Ensures proper conservation initiatives, supervises staff and volunteers, provides safe working protocols inside the cave, trains subordinate staff, conducts cave tours and interpretation programming, and collaborates with the Cave Resource Manager.

Job Duties
Administer and supervise day‑to‑day operations for the Cave; prepare schedule for cave openings and closings; prepare cavern(s) for tours.
Oversee, schedule and perform daily, weekly, monthly, and annual tasks to maintain health of the cave ecosystem and safety standards for staff and visitors.
Manage all aspects of Cave operations, customer service, interpretive planning, and oversee staff and volunteers on conservation and preservation of the living cavern per the Annual Operation Plan.
Communicate with all staff and departments across Kartchner Caverns State Park; inventory Cave Unit supplies and make purchases.
Lead, develop, and mentor staff; conduct one‑on‑one sessions; make purchases for the Cave Unit office.
Develop and provide cave tours to park visitors and outreach programs when requested.
Assist Resource Manager with facility care standards, annual operating plan development, and implementation; review and recommend current policy, principles, and laws pertaining to operations.
Other duties as assigned related to the position.
Maintain cave lighting system and collaborate on cave maintenance projects and lighting system with Southern Region Construction Services team.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) • Outdoor recreation and park management; outdoor/environmental and/or history/archeology education.
• Principles and processes for customer service, safety, security, sanitation, operation maintenance, and public relations.
• Park rules, department policies, facility operational standards, emergency response procedures.
• First Responder Training, EMS or First Aid training.
• Knowledge of fees and revenue functions, general office procedures, and federal, state and agency laws.
• Emergency medical procedures.
Skills • Effective communication (written & verbal), active listening, public speaking (lecture & impromptu).
• Customer service, critical thinking, issue resolution, de‑escalation.
• Training and education program development for park safety.
• Supervisory skills for employees and volunteers.
Abilities • Work unsupervised in a dynamic environment; collaborate with coworkers to resolve issues; develop, modify, and manage special programs.
• Interact effectively with diverse visitors and meet their needs.
• Work in extreme temperatures and high humidity.
Selective Preferences
Combination of training and experience that meets the KSAs, e.g., relevant degree, coursework, work experience.
Two years above high school with 12 semester hours of related coursework.
Three years experience in park operations, public programs, customer service, outdoor recreation.
Pre‑Employment Requirements
Obtain and maintain an Arizona Class D driver’s license.
Maintain a current Arizona driver’s license appropriate for assignment.
Obtain CPR/First Aid within 90 days.
For driving required positions, meet driver’s license requirements.
All newly hired State employees must complete E‑Verify.
