Position Description
The Ohio Public Defender’s Office is seeking a passionate, organized, and strategic indigent defense leader to join its executive leadership team as a Trial Services Deputy Director. The primary responsibility is to provide effective office and personnel operations across four Ohio county offices (Ross, Trumbull, Athens and Washington counties). You will develop and execute a strategic vision for each county office, ensuring sustainable work environments, high employee engagement, and quality client service. Key functions include leadership and management of staff, implementation of professional development programs, coordination of strategic trial litigation, advising the director and assistant directors on legal, operational, and administrative matters, and building a culture of client‑centered collaboration and communication.
You will also serve in an advisory capacity to the Assistant Director of Trial Services, Assistant Director of Columbus Office, and the State Public Defender, and may carry a small caseload. To be successful, you must have prior leadership experience in public defense, and demonstrate the ability to coach people, independently build and reinforce trust among staff, proactively use resources, and collaborate to solve challenges.
Essential Functions
Manage Operations:
Conduct regular one‑on‑one and team meetings, provide feedback and development support, and cultivate a positive, collaborative work environment. Travel regularly to county offices to provide in‑person support and training.
Recruitment, Retention, And Development:
Lead pipeline initiatives that connect with candidates, develop and implement comprehensive onboarding, evaluate outcomes, and coach staff with innovative methods.
Advisory Capacity:
Assist in formulating policies, procedures, and administrative rules; assist with agency budgeting and evaluate proposed legislation affecting operations.
Supervision:
Directly supervise attorneys, manage work schedules, provide coaching and training, conduct performance reviews, and handle budget oversight for division/agency initiatives.
Special Projects and Other Duties:
Render legal advice on all matters of criminal law and representation of indigent defendants, serve as attorney‑at‑law across the state, apply high level technical and legal skills, and handle a reduced caseload when necessary.
This position requires extensive in‑office time, frequent travel within Ohio, and occasional travel outside Ohio. Your office location will be in our Columbus office.
Compensation
The Trial Services Regional Director position has a target compensation of $137,000 to $145,000 per year and is within the State of Ohio’s E‑2 Pay Range 44.
