Overview In accordance with education‑based athletics, Assistant Coaches will work with Head Coaches to develop an effective coaching program plan which includes skill development, practice planning, and supervision of all levels of the sport. The focus will be on individual and team growth while instilling the highest ideals of character. Assistant Coaches will effectively communicate with Head Coaches, student‑athletes, parents, and administration.

Education And Work Experience

Teachers or certificated professional educators employed by the local Board of Education

Persons certifiable as professional educators by the State Department of Education according to 13A.12.01

Credentialed coaches who meet the following requirements:

Are eligible to hold a Maryland certificate under COMAR 13A.12.01

Possess an MPSSAA/MSDE Coaching Certification

Completed two years of successful coaching as an emergency coach

Spent the previous one year as a successful emergency coach at the school of hire in the position of hire

Essential Job Functions

Be knowledgeable of the contents of the Charles County Public Schools Extra‑Curricular Handbook and adhere to all athletics policies

Assist head coach/sponsor with pre‑season meetings

Report directly to head coach/sponsor

Set an example of good moral and physical behavior

Make recommendations for improvements, new equipment, etc.

Report to practice thirty minutes before announced practice time on non‑school days

Secure building during and after each practice and game

Help keep the coach's office clean

Inform players of their responsibilities and enforce all rules set by the school, county, and state

Teach fundamentals and promote sportsmanship

Check constantly for damaged property and equipment and report damage immediately

Ensure all players fulfill the eligibility requirements of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association and the Charles County Board of Education

Provide the athletic director/principal with all pertinent certifications required by the MPSSAA and Charles County Public Schools

Supervise every minute of every practice/activity

Assume responsibility for conduct and well‑being of every player/student on trips

Delegate duties to student managers but retain responsibility for their actions

Conduct self‑ and team to be a credit to the school and the community

Attend all varsity games and assist head coach or scout for the varsity

Collect and check in all equipment

Assist with inventory and report to the athletic director/Principal

Make a list of missing equipment and the responsible student

Ensure equipment is placed in proper storage area

Report any equipment needing repair and provide a list to the athletic director

Collect cost of lost equipment from players and turn in money collected to athletic director or Head Coach

Assist in listing all players who qualify for letter awards, etc.

Assist head coach with a list of special honors received by team members

Attend coaches' meetings, clinics, etc.

Complete complete list of school records for each sport, including new records set for the season

Help assist head coach with budget request for next season; items should be listed in order of priority

Environmental Factors & Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10‑50 pounds. The role requires good hand‑eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, and visual acuity to use a keyboard. The employee frequently must sit, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.
