Position Summary Midnight Sun Professional Services is looking to hire a Chemist (Intermediate).

The Chemist (Intermediate) will provide analytical and research support within the Forensic Sciences Section of the Aerospace Medical Research Division (AAM-600) at the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI). CAMI, located at the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center (MMAC) in Oklahoma City, OK, serves as the medical certification, education, research, and occupational medicine arm of the Office of Aerospace Medicine (AAM) under the FAA's Office of Aviation Safety (AVS).

The Aerospace Medical Research Division conducts critical research and laboratory investigations in support of the FAA's aviation safety mission. Core functions include assembling medical data related to aviation mishaps, performing state‑of‑the‑art toxicological analyses on postmortem samples, maintaining radiation exposure models, researching the epidemiology of aircraft accidents, and studying human physiological and performance factors in aviation environments. The Division also investigates crash protection, survival factors, and emergency response systems to enhance overall aviation safety.

Within this framework, the Chemist (Intermediate) plays a vital role in supporting the Forensic Toxicology Laboratory, which performs analytical testing on biological specimens collected from transportation accident investigations. The position requires technical expertise in chemical analysis, quality assurance, and research methodology to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and scientific integrity of laboratory results. This position is contingent upon contract award.

Duties / Responsibilities

Perform repetitive complex tasks according to the Laboratory's SOP for the analysis of chemical substances in biological specimens, including postmortem fluids and tissues.

Perform forensic analytical work including Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectrometry, High Performance Liquid Chromatography / Mass Spectrometry, UV / VIS Spectrophotometry, and Immunoassay.

Record, verify, and maintain laboratory notes in accordance with the Laboratory's SOP manual.

Contribute to the Quality Assurance / Quality Control functions for the Laboratory and participate in the Laboratory's accreditation process.

Develop forensically relevant procedures to detect and analyze new and emerging drugs.

Perform research for acquiring new laboratory equipment.

Maintain chemical/supply inventory per Laboratory SOPs.

Calibrate and maintain Laboratory instruments and equipment in compliance with ISO and ABFT requirements.

Maintain a clean work area.

Perform statistical analysis of laboratory data.

Perform independent research with minimal supervision to develop methods to detect and analyze new and emerging drugs.

Minimum Requirements

Education: B.S. degree or higher in Chemistry, Forensic Science, or related field.

4 years related experience with a B.S. degree; 1 year related experience with a M.S. degree.

Knowledge & Skills

Understanding of biological sample handling and toxicological analysis methods.

Proficiency in laboratory data entry, documentation, and report generation.

Familiarity with laboratory safety standards and quality assurance practices.

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary scientific team.

Work Environment

Work is performed onsite at the FAA's Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI), located at the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center (MMAC) in Oklahoma City, OK.

The position involves laboratory work with biological materials and chemical reagents, requiring adherence to biosafety and chemical hygiene protocols.
