Working Hours The Chemist (Intermediate) will perform tasks during the Government's primary operational hours, Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM through 6:00 PM. Normal office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Telework may be authorized with coordination with the COR and authorized by the Contracting Officer (CO).
Summary of Duties The Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI) is the medical certification, education, research, and occupational medicine arm of the Office of Aerospace Medicine (AAM) under the auspices of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAAs) Office of Aviation Safety (AVS). The Aerospace Medical Research Division of CAMI (AAM-600) is located at the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center (MMAC), in Oklahoma City, OK.
The Aerospace Medical Research Division accomplishes the following core functions in support of the FAAs aviation safety mission. The Chemist (Intermediate) will support the Forensic Sciences Section in performing repetitive complex tasks according to the Laboratorys SOP for the analysis of chemical substances in biological specimens, including postmortem fluids and tissues.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry, Forensic Science or related field from an accredited university.
Master of Science Degree, if preferred.
One (1)-year related experience with a Master of Science Degree.
Four (4) years related experience with a Bachelor of Science Degree.
Knowledge of principles and practices of biology, chemistry, and forensic toxicology.
Proficiency in laboratory techniques for biological sample preparation and chemical analysis.
Familiarity with analytical instrumentation (e.g., GC, GC-MS, LC-MS/MS) and associated software.
Understanding laboratory safety, biohazard handling, and quality assurance & control procedures.
Ability to maintain accurate records, follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), and ensure chain-of-custody integrity.
Skill in troubleshooting laboratory equipment and interpreting analytical data.

Duties and Responsibilities
Perform repetitive complex tasks according to the Laboratorys SOP for the analysis of chemical substances in biological specimens, including postmortem fluids and tissues.
Perform forensic analytical work including Gas Chromatography/ Mass Spectrometry, High Performance Liquid Chromatography/ Mass Spectrometry, UV/VIS Spectrophotometry, and Immunoassay.
Record, verify, and maintain laboratory notes in accordance with the Laboratorys SOP manual.
Contribute to the Quality Assurance/Quality Control functions for the Laboratory and participate in the Laboratorys accreditation process.
Develop forensically relevant procedures to detect and analyze for new and emerging drugs.
Perform research into acquiring new laboratory equipment.
Maintain chemical/supply inventory per Laboratory SOPs.
Calibrate and maintain Laboratory instruments and equipment in compliance with ISO and ABFT requirements.
Maintain a clean work area.
Perform statistical analysis of laboratory data.
Perform independent research with minimal supervision to develop methods to detect and analyze new and emerging drugs.
