Overview

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds, and maintains power equipment, such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, dredges, pumps, compressors, and pneumatic tools. This worker operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects, dismantles, and reassembles equipment, using hoists and hand tools, examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges, replaces defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions, and tests overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency. The mechanic welds broken parts and structural members, may direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and disassembly of equipment, and may repair, adjust, and maintain mining machinery.

Essential Functions

  • Manage maintenance activities and/or equipment operation at the local places of performance
  • Develop maintenance procedures, ensure implementation, allocate workload, supervise contractor employees, and monitor equipment status
  • Monitor and manage relationships with the customer
  • Keep maintenance logs, report on daily activities
  • Ensure health and safety policy adherence
  • Analyze malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds, and maintains power equipment
  • Operate and inspect machines or equipment to diagnose defects, dismantle and reassemble equipment, and test overhauled equipment
  • Weld broken parts and structural members
  • May direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and disassembly of equipment
  • May repair, adjust, and maintain mining machinery
  • Perform other duties as assigned in association with established Management and Contract Compliance Plan and workload requirements
  • Adhere to PTi quality, safety, and environmental standards

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

  • May be required to attend the Government provided Section 608/609 certification training
  • Must be available during operating hours
  • May be required to be available up to 24 hours per day, 7 days per week during key events
  • Subject to mandatory drug testing as required
  • May be required to handle equipment/supplies weighing up to 50 pounds individually and occasionally more with assistance
  • Able to exert moderate physical effort in loading, unloading, and arranging equipment/supplies
  • Ability to work inside and/or outside in dirty and dusty environments and to be exposed to hot, cold, damp, and drafty weather conditions
  • Able to perform work on hard or uneven surfaces

Qualifications

  • Two years' experience inspecting and troubleshooting mechanical and electronic components on heavy-duty military vehicles using computerized diagnostic equipment; repair, cleaning, replacing defective parts of components and systems
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Skilled in planning, controlling, executing, multi-tasking and being responsible for the successful completion of work requirements
  • Ability to effectively read and write in English, comprehend instructions, perform common mathematical tasks, and communicate effectively

Certificate, License, Registration, Etc.

  • Certificate from a Vocational Technical School for vehicle or equipment mechanic, or graduation from Vehicle/Equipment/Power Generation Mechanic Advanced Individual Training (AIT) or equivalent
  • Valid U.S. State Class A CDL
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Possess or be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance applicable to the position and/or CAC within 30 days if required
  • Completion of contractual and company mandated trainings applicable to position

Education

  • Minimum high school diploma or GED

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior Military
