Position Summary Under minimal supervision of the Chief Seizure Technologist, this role performs long‑term video‑EEG monitoring on patients with scalp and intracranial electrodes in an epilepsy unit. The technician also conducts electrocorticography in the operating room, cortical stimulation studies and special studies such as Wada testing.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Adhere to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.

Perform duties as an EEG technologist and evoked potential technologist as assigned.

Conduct long‑term video‑EEG monitoring on an epilepsy unit, interacting with patients during seizures, interviewing patients, and testing cognitive, memory and speech functions during and after seizures.

Provide emergency care for patients during seizures.

Record EEG on patients with scalp, depth electrodes and grids.

Assist and record during direct cortical stimulation studies.

Perform EEG recording during special studies including Wada testing, PET, SPECT, and nitrous oxide/sodium pentothal studies.

Perform electrocorticography from the exposed cerebral cortex in the operating room.

Troubleshoot, repair, and replace instrument parts as needed.

Provide in‑service training for the electrodiagnostic staff on long‑term monitoring techniques.

Assist in establishing and maintaining department procedures and protocols for long‑term epilepsy monitoring.

Assist or perform clinical epilepsy research procedures.

Prepare presentations and contribute to conferences on electroneurodiagnostics, especially long‑term epilepsy monitoring, for continuing education.

Properly clean and sterilize electrodes, calibrate and adjust EEG instruments to technical standards to obtain high‑quality recordings.

Perform routine activation procedures such as HV and photic stimulation.

Review all EEG tracings with supervision and implement suggestions for improvement.

Compile billing information for the supervisor.

Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements

High school graduate or equivalent (minimum).

At least 2 years of experience in EEG/long‑term monitoring on an epilepsy unit; preference for related college coursework.

Graduated from an accredited electroneurodiagnostic technology program or equivalent formal training is preferred.

ABRET certification is preferred.

Certification in BLS.

Explain test procedures to patients and obtain accurate history including seizure type and timing.

Calibrate and adjust EEG instruments to technical standards; record using standard montages.

Identify and eliminate electrode artifact to ensure adequate testing.

Review EEG tracings; implement quality improvement suggestions.

Maintain supportive attitude with co‑workers; foster a positive team environment.

Apply EEG electrode placement using the 10‑20 international system.

Participate in performance improvement processes and projects.

Physical/Mental Demands and Work Environment

May be exposed to chemicals required for the tasks; safety data sheets are accessible through the hospital intranet.
