RN II (Day Shift) – John S. Dunn Behavioral Sciences Center / HCPC – UTHealth Houston Location:

University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston)

Position Summary:

The John S. Dunn Behavioral Sciences Center, the largest academic psychiatric hospital in the country, is hiring Registered Nurses to provide professional nursing care on the day shift. The role involves assessing patients’ medical and psychiatric needs, delivering individualized inpatient treatment, and coordinating care with multidisciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

Assess patients’ needs, plan and implement nursing interventions, and evaluate response to treatment.

Assist patients and families with discharge planning, medication instructions, and home‑care referrals.

Participate in team conferences, collaborating with physicians, psychiatrists, therapists and community resources.

Serve as liaison between patients, physicians, multidisciplinary providers, and community agencies.

Document patient care and outcomes in accordance with hospital policy and accrediting standards.

Administer medication and other therapeutic interventions as ordered by the physician.

Respond to emergency situations and provide CPR or first aid if required.

Stay abreast of nursing developments through continuing education, workshops, and peer communication.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Certification / Skills

Registered Nurse (RN) State Licensure or Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) endorsed by the Texas Board of Nursing.

Current certification in Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.

Psychiatric nursing experience and trauma‑informed care preferred.

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited school with at least one year of nursing experience; OR

Associate’s degree in nursing from an accredited school with at least three years of nursing experience; OR

Nursing diploma (three‑year program) with two years of experience; OR

ADN with two years experience at HCPC as a Staff Nurse I.

Minimum Experience Years of experience vary with educational level, but a minimum of one year is required for the base RN qualification.

Physical Requirements Ability to exert up to 50 pounds occasionally and/or 20 pounds frequently; or perform negligible amounts of physical effort.

Security Sensitive Position is security‑sensitive per Texas Education Code, pursuant to relevant statutes. Routine security reviews will be conducted.

Residency Requirement Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
