Professional Development Manager
Manatt, Phelps & Phillips LLP is seeking a passionate Professional Development Manager to join its Professional Development team. The role supports innovative training and performance initiatives across the firm’s offices, and it requires collaboration with legal, practice group leaders, and other departments to develop and deliver high‑impact professional development programs.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with the Director of Professional Development, legal, and practice group leaders to design and execute training programs for attorneys and business professionals.
Lead the planning and execution of practice group training initiatives, including designing annual curricula and overseeing core program delivery.
Develop and manage interactive mock‑style trainings (e.g., mock trials, corporate simulations) in partnership with the team.
Create and deliver orientation programming for summer associates, first‑year associates, counsel, and partners.
Partner with other departments to develop and execute relevant training initiatives.
Develop and implement leveled training programs, academies, and professional skills curricula.
Conduct research and remain informed on emerging trends and best practices in legal and professional services training.
Coordinate external speakers and vendors, providing recommendations as needed.
Meet with new lateral associates and partners to conduct welcome programming and individual PD orientations.
Manage the firm’s LMS and CLE systems, build training tracks, and maintain compliance with CLE rules in the states where the firm operates.
Oversee attorney mentoring program direction and administration, including communications and training initiatives.
Conduct surveys and analyze results to identify training needs.
Support the Director and Performance Management team in refreshing competency frameworks.
Generate proactive ideas to enhance CLE and training initiatives.
Manage budget and expenses with the Director.
Assist with general Professional Development, CLE projects, performance management, and advancement projects on occasion.
Supervise junior team members.
Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor’s degree required; J.D. preferred.
Minimum 5 years of legal experience in a professional services firm.
Prior experience with CLE tracking systems or databases.
Strong attention to detail, problem‑solving, and project management skills.
Ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
Willingness to travel for firm‑wide training programs.
Excellent relationship‑building and cross‑department collaboration skills.
Strong client‑service orientation, communication skills, and discretion with confidential information.
Leadership and team‑building experience with planning, organizing, and decision‑making.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Base salary range: $135,000 – $165,000. Additional compensation may vary based on experience and location. Full range of benefits will be offered.
