Department Summary The UNT Dallas College of Law invites applications for the position of Career Counselor in the Office of Career and Professional Development.
Our mission is to promote justice and advance human potential through the enterprise of legal education.
Position Overview The Career Counselor reports to the Assistant Dean of Career and Professional Development and is responsible for providing employment counseling and career education for law students and alumni.
The role includes teaching, advising, and counseling students and alumni in career development, shaping career goals, and providing job placement assistance.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree and three (3) years related experience, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Preferred Qualifications J.D. degree; 1 year of experience in the legal profession; advanced knowledge of career development theories; knowledge of needs assessment theory and program design; knowledge of UNT Dallas College of Law programs.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of procedures and concepts within own discipline and a basic understanding of other disciplines; ability to use judgment based on practice; ability to exchange information with tact and diplomacy; ability to evaluate information from multiple sources and draw conclusions.
Job Duties
Research and analyze the current state of the legal services and job markets, forecasting emerging trends.
Identify existing and emerging career and job options, assessing feasibility for alumni attorneys.
Periodically assess evolving career development needs of students.
Manage improvements, revisions, and new services, programs, and resources.
Maintain and enhance professional network and leverage it on behalf of students and alumni.
Develop and oversee presentation and delivery of broad and complex career‑focused programs and workshops.
Work with career services staff on specific administrative tasks.
Determine media for delivering content online, print, blogs, social networking, tweets, live webcasting, and more.
Provide one‑on‑one, individually tailored, customer‑driven career consulting/ coaching/advising services.
Assist students in conducting self‑assessments and provide specific job leads and networking contacts.
Develop and critique law student application materials.
Participate in panel discussions, presentations, research, and writing articles on career development and the legal job market.
Physical Requirements Communicating with others to exchange information.
Environmental Hazards No adverse environmental conditions expected.
Work Schedule As required by academic schedule.
