Veteran Peer Specialist
–
U.S.VETS
Location: Long Beach, CA | Salary: $50,000.00–$165,000.00. This full‑time position invites applicants who are passionate about supporting veterans and helping them achieve independence and wellbeing.

Responsibilities
Maintain a harmonious therapeutic environment by communicating with clinical staff and program staff and fostering a supportive community among clients.
Establish rapport, maintain professional boundaries, and provide individualized and group services that help veterans meet recovery and life goals.
Prevent or de‑escalate problematic behaviors and submit incident reports to the appropriate supervisory staff.
Ensure compliance with VA, HUD, and other funder regulations; procure third‑party documentation and keep all program documentation current.
Participate in case conferences, consultations, and staffing with relevant staff.
Facilitate or attend monthly Town Hall meetings and other group sessions including peer‑to‑peer groups and life‑skills classes.
Assist case managers in maintaining confidential client files and ensuring all required documentation is current, signed, and properly organized.
Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and use client‑tracking databases and electronic case records.
Conduct data collection, quality‑management activities, and report preparation.
Attend scheduled team meetings and trainings; maintain and submit accurate timesheets, mileage logs, and supportive service requests.
Provide transportation to community medical, housing, and other appointments as needed.
Coordinate therapeutic, social, and recreational activities and outings.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Program‑Specific Duties
For the Veteran Support to Self‑Reliance Pilot (VSSR) program:
Provide peer counseling, referrals, and advocacy to formerly homeless veterans.
Facilitate peer groups (e.g., cooking, arts, movie nights).
Monitor and address residential concerns; support access to substance‑use and mental‑health services.
Ensure timely progress‑note filing and assist with hoarding issues.
For Transitional Housing (TH) programs:
Ensure client daily accountability through contact, bed checks, and sign‑in logs.
Conduct room inspections and toxicology testing.
Encourage and coordinate participation in program activities.
For Long‑Term Supportive Housing (LTSH) programs:
Maintain activity calendar (≥2 per week) and monthly Town Hall meeting.
Coordinate shuttle van runs to VA and grocery stores.
Act as liaison with Property Management; assist with resident lock‑outs and property issues.
Provide crisis intervention and therapeutic support as needed.
For Mental Health programs:
Work directly with the Clinical Director or program leaders.
Assist clients with benefits acquisition and housing search processes.
For Rapid Re‑Housing programs (SSVF):
Assist with application screening, stand‑downs, and rapid‑resolution outreach.
Provide peer support and coaching during housing placement.
For Income and Benefits Advocacy:
Collaborate with Income & Benefits Specialist and Clinical Director to navigate benefits for clients.
Transport and accompany clients to benefits appointments.
Assist with personal budgeting and rent payment prioritization.
For Veteran Peer Access Network (VPAN) Program:
Report directly to the VPAN Team Leader and complete required peer‑certification courses.
Advocate, connect veterans to housing, mental health, substance‑abuse treatment, job placement, and legal services.
Attend community meetings and collaborate with local stakeholders.
Qualifications
High School Diploma required.
Minimum of one year in social services or related field preferred.
Veteran of U.S. military or military‑related family member preferred.
Knowledge of self‑advocacy and empowerment techniques.
Experience working with homeless veterans and with clients who have co‑occurring mental‑health and substance‑abuse disorders.
Experience facilitating support groups preferred.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Professional appearance and demeanor.
Independent worker with team orientation.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, internet, and client‑tracking databases.
Valid driver’s license; must meet company insurance requirements and complete driver training upon hire.
