Essential Job Functions

Determines an appropriate pre‑anesthesia examination has been made by a physician, relevant tests have been completed, and a thorough assessment of the patient has been performed.

Develops a plan of care based on assessment, interpretation, anticipated procedure, and essential equipment.

Coordinates with appropriate health care providers.

Administers anesthetic agents and adjunctive therapeutics.

Monitors physiological responses and takes corrective action to maintain or stabilize the patient’s condition.

Provides resuscitative care.

Records pertinent information on the patient’s records.

Terminates anesthesia.

Provides patients with post‑anesthesia care.

Education Required: Degree requirements as defined by the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners (TSBNE) for clinical licensure as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.

Experience Required: None.

Licensure / Certification Required: All of the following:

Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN) issued by the Texas Board of Nursing.

Current State of Texas Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license recognizing the certification for Advanced Practice Registered Nurse CRNA (APRN‑CRNA), issued by the Texas Board of Nursing.

Certification or recertification as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) issued by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA).

ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).

PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).

May be required: Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.
