Lab Assistant - Fire Service (FST)

Hourly Rate: $21.61

This position is an on-campus, part-time, up-to 19-hour appointment based in Champaign, Illinois.

The Lab Assistant is

responsible for providing support to the FST instructor by preparing demonstrations,

organizing supplies/equipment, observing, assisting students with lab

practices, and testing. The Lab

Assistant is a part-time, 19-hour-per-week appointment on a schedule

established by the FST Program Director. The position involves handling

confidential information and records. The Lab Assistant must be able to work

independently and effectively prioritize tasks. Applicants must submit:

Essential Job Functions: Maintain computer lab environment.

Prepare laboratory environments for instruction by assembling necessary resources.

Assist instructors, answer questions, and direct students to resources.

Disassemble and store equipment; operate audio-visual equipment.

Notify the FST Program Director or Clinical Coordinator of equipment repair, maintenance, and replacement needs.

Coordinate with other campus departments to troubleshoot problems.

Manage the FST labs in compliance with college safety policies.

Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum

Requirements: Previous experience of at least 1-year as a volunteer firefighter or a Full-time firefighter currently with a department agency or similar environment.

Must be a Firefighter and cannot be on probationary period.

Prospective new hires will successfully complete a post offer, pre-employment criminal background check with fingerprinting. The background check review includes, but is not limited to, exclusionary offenses per the Illinois School Code and Title IV of the Higher Education Act.

Verbal and mathematical abilities sufficient to organize the efficient use of the laboratory, operation of computers and software, and effective communication.

Ability to learn the computer laboratory resources and new programs and equipment as technology changes.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office or Office 365, including Teams and Outlook, and the ability to learn the Parkland systems and adapt to new programs as technologies are implemented.

Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds with no assistance.

In an effort to comply with SURS return-to-work restrictions for employers (40 ILCS 5/15-139.5), candidates for employment at Parkland College must either not be a SURS annuitant or must be willing to suspend his/her SURS annuity upon employment. This applies to all SURS annuitants except those receiving their annuity under either the Self-Managed Plan (SMP) or by lump sum payment.
