GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK
Serve as a supervisory officer within the police department.
Act as Officer in Charge (OIC) in the absence of a sergeant or higher-ranking officer.
Oversee and coordinate the activities of police officers and other personnel during shifts.
Performs intermediate protective service work involving a variety of general or support duty police assignments.
Expected to perform under emergency conditions which will involve considerable personal hazard.
Performs related work as required.
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping and feeling. Vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly. Hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound. Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND TYPICAL TASKS
Performs all expected duties of a law enforcement officer to include but not limited to, enforcing laws, investigate criminal activity, ensure safety of the public, testifies in court, maintain records and files, prepares reports, traffic control and enforcement, crime prevention, investigation of criminal and citizen complaints.
Supervise and manage daily operations, ensuring compliance with department policies and procedures.
Provide leadership, guidance, and support to patrol officers and other staff.
Conduct briefings at the start of shifts, assign duties, and ensure proper staffing levels.
Monitor and evaluate the performance of subordinate officers, providing feedback and recommendations for improvement.
Respond to major incidents, assuming command and coordinating resources as needed.
Prepare and review reports, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
Conduct investigations and follow-up on cases as necessary.
Ensure proper maintenance and readiness of equipment and vehicles.
Facilitate training and development opportunities for officers.
Serve as a liaison between the department and community, addressing concerns and fostering positive relationships.
Performs related tasks as required.
Geographical and Community Policing Tasks/Responsibilities Supervise and Mentor Community Engagement Develop and maintain positive relationships with community members, local organizations, and businesses to address community concerns and foster trust between the police and the public.
Problem Solving Identify and address local crime trends and quality-of-life issues through proactive problem-solving techniques. Collaborate with community stakeholders to implement effective solutions.
Resource Allocation Manage and allocate resources efficiently within assigned geographic areas. Ensure that patrols and other policing activities are effectively conducted to maximize community safety.
Incident Response Respond to and manage incidents within assigned areas, ensuring effective handling of emergency situations, investigations, and crime scene management.
Data Analysis Analyze crime data and community feedback to identify patterns and areas needing attention. Use data to inform strategic planning and improve policing strategies.
Training and Development Conduct training sessions for officers on community policing strategies, local issues, and best practices. Promote continuous professional development within the team.
Reporting and Documentation Maintain accurate records of community policing activities, incidents, and interactions. Prepare detailed reports and documentation for internal use and community updates.
Community Outreach Programs Initiate and participate in community outreach programs, such as neighborhood watch groups, school resource officer programs, and public safety seminars.
Collaboration with Other Agencies Work with other law enforcement agencies, social services, and community organizations to address cross-jurisdictional issues and enhance public safety.
Policy Implementation Ensure that departmental policies related to community policing and geographical assignments are effectively implemented and adhered to.

Proven experience as a police officer with a demonstrated record of effective performance.
Strong leadership and supervisory skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
Ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
Comprehensive knowledge of law enforcement procedures, policies, and regulations.
Proficiency in report writing and documentation.
Commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
Thorough knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures.
Detailed knowledge of the geography of the City of Lexington and the location of important buildings.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear, comprehensive reports.
Capability to deal courteously, firmly and tactfully with the general public.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and with the public.
Possession of physical agility and endurance; and
Skill in the use of firearms and the operation of a motor vehicle.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, completion of basic training and certification as a police officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia and considerable experience as a police officer.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia;
Must meet and maintain all department and State training and education requirements for position.
