Position Summary UC Berkeley Youth Recreation offers experiential leadership opportunities for junior and high school‑aged youth in our summer camps. The Junior Counselor is a paid staffed role for high school students to learn the foundational requirements of youth supervision, professional conduct, effective communication, teamwork, and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

Adhere to all scheduling assignments made by Camp Coordinators, Leads, and Assistant Leads to support campers, camper groupings, and activities.

Support and assist activity instructors and assigned group leaders with any delegated tasks.

Provide mentoring and guidance to campers in support of camp staff.

Lead general supervision of campers and downtime activities during the camper lunch period.

Assist with the set‑up and take‑down of camp facilities; help tidy camp areas daily.

Account for all campers in assigned group and conduct head counts regularly.

Follow check‑in/out duties as assigned.

Walk campers safely between locations and supervise them on water/restroom breaks as needed.

Assist campers with belongings, lost and found, sunscreen/water, lunch, swim change, trash pick‑up, etc.

Participate in all special events, staff meetings, theme days, and programs designated by leadership.

Look for ways to improve the camp/program and share feedback in weekly staff meetings.

Prepare, maintain, and process forms and paperwork accurately (e.g., work permits, reports, timesheets).

Complete accident and incident reports; adhere to mandated reporting laws regarding child abuse and neglect.

Keep equipment and supplies in order, properly maintained and stored.

Develop age‑appropriate relationships with campers.

Demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, and sensitivity in all interactions with campers, staff, and parents.

Follow all camp policies and procedures in the Employee Handbook and Code of Conduct, including wearing required uniform and following the assigned work schedule.

Maintain a supportive environment for campers and staff; accept constructive feedback and correct accordingly.

Perform miscellaneous tasks as requested by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications

Minimum age 16 years.

Previous experience/service hours working with youth; at least 500 camp/service hours completed.

Adaptable to a varied and challenging environment.

Basic computer skills relevant to job duties.

Effectively work across all program levels, internally and externally.

Passion for working with youth.

Knowledge of youth recreation programs/camps structure.

Completed 10th grade.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in UC Berkeley Youth Recreation or similar youth camp.

Knowledge of UC Berkeley campus policies and procedures.

Current American Red Cross Adult & Pediatric CPR, AED, First‑Aid, Epi‑Pen + Asthma certification (required for promotion to Group Leader/Instructor).

Salary & Benefits The hourly range is

$20.00 - $20.25 . Additional benefits are provided by the University of California; refer to the Compensation & Benefits website.
