Primary Function
Supervises an area of responsibility for the EVS department; ensures a consistently high level of environmental hygiene and aesthetics to patients, visitors and staff. This position also is responsible for daily oversight of regulatory standards, financial stewardship of department operations and collaboration with other management and supervisory team members to support the department in its daily functions.
Job Description Supervises the necessary resources needed for the Environmental Services department under their control and makes recommendations to hiring, promoting and annual staff performance reviews. Supervises a waste program that separates, packages and disposes of all waste according to all regulations. Performs quality improvement initiatives under direction of EVS Manager. Conducts rounding activities to ensure environmental hygiene in all areas assigned. Prepares necessary reporting to Manager and documents results. Maintains and ensures EVS closets are neat and in order. Notifies EVS manager of unusual circumstances, equipment repairs or replacement needs. Demonstrates working knowledge of the cleaning and disinfection principles and requirements, proper chemical, equipment usage and labor requirements for maintenance of furniture, furnishings, interior finishes for all areas of responsibility. Performs and participates in daily routine cleaning task of assigned areas. Provides oversight of inventories, usage data and ordering of consumable supplies and equipment repairs. Revises employee schedule as required to offset absences (annual & sick leave) Check assigned areas daily to ensure it is neat, orderly and clean. Completes record of work and quality assurance check list. Responds to special requests for EVS department. Works on weekends and holidays as required. Supervises the work of subcontractors and/or EVS suppliers for the department as needed. Adheres to all organizational safety, risk management and infection control and prevention standards. Promotes a culture of patient safety through observation and education. Coaches team members on the chain of infection and the core principles of the transmission of infectious pathogens. Responds to emergency calls an multiple priorities as needed to coordinate staffing changes and minimize disruption. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education /Experience High school Diploma or GED is required. Must have a minimum of 3 years EVS experience, with a minimum of two years supervisory experience. Experience in a healthcare setting highly preferred. T-CHEST or CHEST Certification required through AHE (Certified Healthcare Environmental Service Technician) One of the following certifications; CSCT (Certified Surgical Cleaning Technician), CNACC (certified non-acute care cleaning technician) through the Association for the Health Care Environment (ahe.org) is highly preferred Must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license. This position will take three to six months to become proficient in most phase of the job.
Job Knowledge Must have a thorough knowledge of the requirement, policies and guidelines for EVS procedures for CIHA and applicable OSHA protocol. Must be skilled in the use of mechanical and manual cleaning equipment such as a low/high speed buffer, scrubber, vacuum cleaner, carpet machine. Requires the ability to clean and maintain assigned equipment and train new employees on such equipment. Must be familiar with hospital lay out. Requires the ability to follow both verbal and written instructions. Must be able to read, write and so some simple arithmetic. Must be familiar with tribal and CIHA personnel policies and procedures. Requires the ability to coordinate and supervise a hospital EVS program. Requires the ability to maintain specified records, files and logs and to compile data and prepare reports. Must be familiar with inventory requirements and reordering guidelines.
Complexity of Duties Deals with varies situations which require planning and problem solving skills. Must analyze situations and take appropriate actions. Initiative and motivation are necessary to maintain accuracy and complete tasks efficiently. May supervise up to 16 employees.
Supervision Received Works under the general supervision of the EVS manager.
Responsibility for Accuracy Normal review and quality audits would detect most errors, undetected errors could have minimal or far-reaching effects. Must ensure all procedures and standards are followed to reduce the risk of disease or exposure to unsafe situations.
Contact with Others Interacts with coworkers, medical professionals and the public where tact, courtesy and professional etiquette are required. Must maintain a positive image and working relationship with others.
Confidential Data Has access to employee information and management discussions which should be kept confidential. Must adhere to all CIHA confidentiality policies and procedures.
Mental/Visual/Physical Close attention to detail is required for some procedures and normal alertness for much of the time. Job duties require extensive physical effort such as walking, reaching, bending, pushing, pulling and often working in awkward positions. Must have visual acuity, manual dexterity and be able to speak and hear.
Environment Has contact with potential disease or accidents such as falls, back strain, electrical shock or minor cuts to fingers and hands. Has some contact with biohazard substances and cleaning solutions which must be handled properly. Following established safety guidelines would reduce the risk of injury or disease. Has exposure to biohazards where OSHA standards must be followed.
Extent of Supervision Responsible for the housekeeping groups adherence to all applicable guidelines, policies and procedures. Participates in the selection, motivation, training and evaluation of employees.
Scope of Supervision Oversees 8 – 16 employees.
Customer Service Consistently demonstrates superior customer service skills to patients/customers by demonstrating characteristics that align with CIHA’s guiding principles and core values. Ensure excellent customer service is provided to all patients/customers by seeking out opportunities to be of service.
