Overview The Groundman position is your first step to a rewarding career in the construction and maintenance of the nation’s Power Grid. You will assist your team in building, repairing, and maintaining overhead electrical distribution systems.

Physical Aspects Typical duties include standing, walking, using hands to handle and feel, reaching, climbing structures (wood, steel, etc.), lifting or moving up to or in excess of 50 lbs., and performing rigorous physical labor in various weather conditions.

Work Environment Work is performed outdoors, exposing workers to fumes, mechanical parts, vibration, extreme weather, and high noise levels.

General Expectations

Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License within 60 days of employment.

Read/write and communicate effectively.

Travel long distances on short notice when required.

Work extended periods at various locations.

Lift in excess of 50 lbs.

Work overtime, weekends, holidays, and outside normal schedules as needed.

Functions Expected in Overhead Powerline Construction

Operate safely during new construction, maintenance, or repair of energized and de‑energized overhead work.

Inspect rubber goods and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Understand proper PPE usage.

String overhead wire, set poles and anchors.

Assist with installation of transformers, lightening arrestors, cutouts, cross‑arms, insulators, switches, and switchgear.

Assist in replacing fuses and clearing faulted circuits.

Work with high‑voltage systems requiring skill and care.

Maintain company vehicles, equipment, and tools.

Understand radio use, rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying.

Identify primary and secondary voltage, induced voltage, and package materials.

Perform bucket rescue/escape and basic transformer hookup.

Work at heights and/or confined spaces.

Follow regulation for excavation, shoring, and grounding.

Work outside, often in inclement weather.

Complete all other related duties as required.
