Overview The Vermont Office of the Attorney General, Department for Children and Families, Family Services Legal Division, has an immediate opening for an energetic and talented full‑time Assistant Attorney General who will be responsible for representing the Department for Children and Families before the Human Services Board.
Description The responsibilities of this position include litigating Family Division cases before the Vermont Superior Courts and representing the Department in administrative appeals before the Human Services Board. Other duties include contract review, related administrative legal work, and training family service workers in all aspects of the litigation process. Travel across the state will be required. Located in Waterbury, the AAG will be responsible for handling litigation in Vermont Superior Courts, Family Division.
Compensation This position is an exempt full‑time position. Salary and benefits will be based upon qualifications and experience in accordance with the State of Vermont Attorney Pay Plan. Minimum Requirements
Candidate must be a member in good standing of the Vermont bar, or eligible to waive in.
Preference given to applicants with at least three years of relevant experience in Vermont, but newly admitted attorneys are welcome to apply.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
Willingness to travel and work independently within the structure of a government legal team.
Self‑reliance, IT skills, and knowledge of state and federal mental health law, regulations, and policies are a plus.
