Director of Therapeutic Recreation Summit Commons Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Providence, RI. This 130-bed skilled nursing facility seeks a Director of Therapeutic Recreation who will report directly to the administrator and serve as a department head.

Experience & Education

Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.

One (1) year experience or training in directing group activities required.

Must meet one of the following criteria: (a) Eligible for certification as a therapeutic recreation specialist or as an activities professional by a recognized accrediting body on or after October 1, 1990; (b) Has 2 years of experience in a social or recreational program within the last 5 years, one of which was full‑time in a therapeutic activities program; (c) Is a qualified occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant; (d) Has completed a training course approved by the State.

Duties & Responsibilities

Assist in planning and provisions of patient care by visiting residents regularly to evaluate needs.

Oversee staffing for the department, including recruitment efforts.

Document and report to the nursing department any unusual or significant findings.

Encourage residents to participate in activities of daily living that stimulate their physical, mental, social, and spiritual potential.

Spend duty time with residents rather than with other facility staff.

Assist with and follow through on the establishment of resident care goals within the therapeutic team framework.

Specific Requirements

Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.

Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.

Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.

Must possess leadership ability and willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise professional and non‑professional personnel.

Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm, and be willing to handle residents at their current maturity level.

Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing policies and procedures.

Must be able to convey information concerning a resident’s condition.

Must participate in continuing education and in‑service training.
