What You Will Be Doing
Professionally maintain all heavy equipment associated with the construction and maintenance of highways, secondary roads and rural airports including, but not limited to motor graders, loaders, dump trucks, roller compactors, sand spreaders, backhoes, and tractor‑trailer combinations.
Job Description
This is an advanced journey level mechanic position required to diagnose, repair and maintain a wide variety of heavy trucks and equipment for the State Fleet.
The work includes computerized diagnostics and the ability to repair electronic and mechanical systems.
The incumbent must be able to resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods.
In a shop or remote setting, the incumbent performs routine and specialized repair and maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment with diverse components and diagnostic requirements.
Examples of equipment include motor graders, loaders, trucks of all types, snow blowers and sanders, often from different manufacturers and a wide range of model years.
The incumbent is required to have a base working knowledge of the equipment components in order to move or operate the equipment for service and must be able to correctly diagnose problems not specified in applicable programs.

Location and Travel
This position is located at MP 3.5 Nome‑Teller Road, Nome, AK.
Some travel in small planes to maintain equipment in remote locations is possible.
Travel consists of day trips and overnight stays.
Qualifications
Mechanical: Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance.
Flexibility: Open to change and new information, rapidly adapts to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles.
Vehicle Maintenance: Knowledge of motor vehicle engines, parts, and systems, including their design, uses, repair and maintenance.
Self‑Management: Sets realistic goals, displays initiative and commitment, works with minimal supervision, is motivated to achieve, and demonstrates responsible behavior.
Minimum Qualifications
Vacancies in this job class are filled through Union referral, except for promotions, demotions, transfers, and emergency appointments.

Commercial Driver’s License Required
This position requires the incumbent to possess a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
A conditional hire approval may be given to applicants who do not yet possess a Class A CDL; the applicant must obtain it within 120 days of hire.
Tool Allowance
Employees in this position are required to provide their own hand tools.
Employees will receive a bi‑weekly tool allowance as determined by LTC contract.
