The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) State Equipment Fleet is looking for a Heavy Duty Mechanic-Automotive-Advanced Journey/Lead to help us Keep Alaska Moving!
Job Title Heavy Duty Mechanic - Advanced Journey / Lead
What you will be doing Professionally maintain all heavy equipment associated with construction and maintenance of highways, secondary roads, and rural airports including motor graders, loaders, dump trucks, roller compactors, sand spreaders, backhoes, and tractor‑trailer combinations. Diagnose, repair, and maintain a wide variety of heavy trucks and equipment for the State Fleet. Use computerized diagnostics and repair electronic and mechanical systems, resolve complex problems, and perform routine and specialized repair in shop or remote settings.
Responsibilities
Maintain and service heavy equipment such as motor graders, loaders, trucks, snow blowers, and sanders.
Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic components using diagnostic equipment.
Perform routine preventive maintenance and specialized repairs in both shop and remote locations.
Operate equipment safely and comply with DOT&PF safety rules.
Assist in inventory and tool management.
Qualifications
Advanced journey level mechanic experience on heavy equipment.
Proficient in computerized diagnostics and repair of electronic systems.
Knowledge of vehicle maintenance – engines, parts, and systems.
Strong mechanical aptitude, problem‑solving, and self‑management skills.
Flexibility and ability to adapt to changing conditions.
Current Class A CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) required. Conditional hire approved with 120‑day CDL acquisition.
Valid work experience and education demonstrating competency in mechanical repair.
Location & Travel MP 3.5 Nome‑Teller Road, Nome, AK. Travel to remote locations by airplane possible – day trips and overnight stays.
