The Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) is responsible for inspecting and verifying weld quality and workmanship throughout the fabrication process. This role ensures that all welded components meet Origin Engineering’s standards, project specifications, and applicable codes. The CWI supports the Quality and Production teams by maintaining compliance with AWS standards, performing inspections, documenting results, and helping ensure consistent, high-quality output.
*Key Responsibilities*
*Inspection & Verification*
* Perform visual and dimensional inspections of welds and assemblies per AWS D1.1, D1.6, and customer specifications. * Verify welding procedures, welder qualifications, and material traceability. * Inspect fit-ups, root passes, and final welds to confirm conformity to standards. * Review fabrication drawings and welding symbols to determine inspection requirements. * Verify that welding consumables and base materials meet approved procedure requirements.
*Documentation & Quality Control*
* Record inspection results, generate Nonconformance Reports (NCRs), and maintain weld logs. * Review and support the development of Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR). * Maintain calibration records for inspection tools and ensure proper use. * Collaborate with Production, Engineering, and Quality to resolve weld-related issues and prevent recurrence.
*Continuous Improvement*
* Participate in quality improvement initiatives and internal audits as needed. * Support training efforts for welders on inspection standards and visual acceptance criteria. * Identify trends in recurring defects and recommend corrective actions to improve process consistency.
*Qualifications*
*Required:*
* AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) Certification in active status. * Minimum 3 years of welding inspection experience in a fabrication or manufacturing environment. * Knowledge of API 1104 structural welding and common fabrication practices. * Proficient in reading blueprints and welding symbols. * Strong attention to detail and ability to document findings clearly.
*Preferred:*
* Experience in an ISO 9001–certified fabrication environment. * Familiarity with metal fabrication processes including MIG, TIG, and flux-core welding. * Working knowledge of non-destructive examination (VT, MT, PT). * Experience using digital quality management or production tracking tools.
*Working Conditions*
* Work is primarily performed on the production floor, with some office time for reporting and documentation. * Requires standing, kneeling, and occasional lifting up to 50 lbs. * Exposure to typical fabrication shop environments including noise, heat, and welding activity (PPE provided).
*Compensation*
* Pay range: $30–$35 per hour, depending on experience and certifications. * Benefits include health insurance, PTO, 401(k), and support for continuing education or AWS renewals.
