The History Colorado AmeriCorps Program endeavors to address equitable K‑12 educational outcomes, quality history educational programming, and the tools to preserve and share a more inclusive Colorado history. This initiative is part of History Colorado's strategic goals to invest in rural prosperity, strengthen education through history, and share the diverse stories of Colorado's past.
AmeriCorps members are dedicated national service participants who commit their time and skills through defined terms of service. The AmeriCorps member will serve as part of the Education Department at the museum, working directly under the supervision of the Education Coordinator. Their primary focus will be to support and deliver high‑impact educational programming to K‑12 students, with an emphasis on equitable access to culturally relevant history education. The member will play a key role in facilitating Hands‑on History programs, field trips, and other student‑focused educational experiences. As capacity allows, the member may also assist with community events, adult educational programming, and broader outreach initiatives.
AmeriCorps Member Perks Include
Living allowance up to $9,997.00, paid in biweekly installments up to $499.85 before taxes
Segal Education Award of $2,817 for qualifying members
Strong, secure, yet flexible retirement benefits including a PERA Defined Benefit Plan or PERA Defined Contribution Plan plus 401(k) and 457 plans

Terms of Service
Service at the Fort Garland Museum and Cultural Center
Average of 15 hours per week, total of 675 hours over the term
Flexible hours required, including occasional evenings and regular weekend commitment
Direct supervision by the Education Coordinator, with additional oversight by the Program Manager
Service term: November 17, 2025 – August 21, 2026
Major Responsibilities And Duties
Plan and facilitate Hands‑On History programming, field trips, classroom visits, and other educational activities tailored to cultural relevance and academic standards
Collaborate with museum staff and community partners to enhance program reach and impact
Participate in professional development opportunities and contribute to continuous improvement of educational programming
Support and facilitate other History Colorado community engagement and story initiative projects as needed
Service Term Overview
Fall (Sept 12–Dec 5): Support Fifth Day Programming every Friday (except Nov 28 for Thanksgiving Break).
Winter Break (Dec 29–31): Assist with Winter Break Camp.
Spring (Jan 30–Apr 24): Facilitate Fifth Day Programming every Friday.
Spring Break (Mar 16–20): Assist with Hands‑On History Spring Break Camp.
Summer (June 1–26 & July 6–24): Support Hands‑On History Summer Camp, including facilitation and cleanup.
Training And Support Provided
In‑person orientation to History Colorado at the History Colorado Center; mileage and lodging costs covered
Training provided by site supervisors for position responsibilities
Additional training and professional development opportunities throughout the term
AmeriCorps positions are service opportunities and not employment positions. Members receive a living allowance, training, and support during their service term.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions Of Employment & Appeal Rights
Strong interest in history, education, or a related field
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Minimum age 18 years
High school diploma or equivalent
U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident (due to AmeriCorps rules)
Ability to pass required criminal history checks
Driver’s license preferred
Experience in educational programming, museum education, or working with K‑12 students preferred
Patience required, as the position largely serves children
Background in history, education, cultural studies, or a related discipline preferred
Familiarity with Colorado’s diverse historical and cultural landscapes preferred
Special Qualifications
Bilingual Spanish/English preferred
Flexibility to work weekends and special events as needed
May require lifting heavy objects and working on ladders
May require periodic travel by car, van, or truck throughout the state, typically less than one week in duration
Supplemental Information
A pre‑service criminal background check will be conducted. Felony convictions or convictions of crimes of moral turpitude or misdemeanors related to position duties may disqualify a candidate. Candidates must provide official disposition of any charges.
