Position Summary
The Department of Classics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking a distinguished colleague to serve as the George L. Paddison Professor of Latin. The appointment is tenured (or tenure‑track) and is intended to support the department’s core curricula in ancient languages and Mediterranean cultures. The selected candidate will teach a wide range of courses and seminars in Latin literature and Roman culture, including advanced language and literature courses, literature in translation, classical civilization courses, and graduate seminars. The professor will also supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students and take an active role in departmental service.
Responsibilities
Teach two courses per semester, covering advanced Latin literature and related subjects.
Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
Maintain an outstanding record of publication and develop an international reputation for excellence in research.
Participate in departmental service and national conferences.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Ph.D. or equivalent in Classics or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Outstanding publication record and international reputation for excellence in research.
Substantial teaching experience and strong mentoring skills.
Administrative experience and leadership in academic settings.
Other Requirements
Tenure or tenure‑track eligibility.
Full‑time, permanent faculty position.
FTE 1.0; 40 hours per week.
Proposed start date: July 1 2026.
