About the Position The Medical Records Coder II is an essential member of the Patient Revenue Management Organization, supporting the health system’s revenue cycle through accurate coding and documentation review.
Responsibilities
Review complex medical records and accurately code primary/secondary diagnoses and procedures using ICD‑10‑CM and CPT‑4 conventions.
Coordinate and review the work of designated employees to ensure quality and quantity of coding output.
Conduct research, develop, and present continuing education programs on coding specialties.
Abstract and compile data from records for optimal reimbursement, including DRG/APC assignment.
Consult with physicians and nursing/ancillary staff to ensure comprehensive documentation for accurate coding.
Maintain an up‑to‑date understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, and surgical techniques.
Assist with special projects as required and perform any related duties incidental to this role.
Qualifications
High school diploma required.
Certification in coding preferred:
RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CPC, or HCS‑D with required years of experience as specified:
RHIA – no experience required
RHIT – no experience required
CCS – one year coding experience required
CPC – two years coding experience required
HCS‑D – two years coding experience required
Proficiency with coding software and strong written and verbal communication skills.
Physical and Administrative Requirements
Must hold an active/current coding certification and be capable of performing job functions to a high level of accuracy and compliance with regulatory standards.
Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet audit requirements.
