Summary

The SMS group’s Program for students interested in software/system development for industrial automation with major in Engineering (Systems, Software, Computer, Manufacturing, Industrial), Material Science, Physics, Mathematics and related fields.

At SMS group Inc., our Electrical and Automation Division plays a pivotal role in the metals industry by spearheading the design, programming, rigorous testing, and seamless commissioning of state-of-the art Process Automation Systems. Our expertise spans a wide array of production lines, encompassing furnaces, casters, rolling mills, and process lines.

As a valued co-op or , you'll be an integral part of our dynamic engineering team, directly contributing to the development of our cutting-edge Process Automation System (Level 2/Supervisory Control System). This system is revolutionizing the metals industry, and your work will have a tangible impact on its success.

What you’ll do

Real-World Software Development:

Dive into the full software development lifecycle, from design to deployment, working on critical components of our automation system.

Diverse Technical Exposure: Gain hands-on experience with a wide range of technologies

Programming: Visual Studio, C#, scripting (e.g., Python, PowerShell)

Databases: MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Oracle

Version Control & Issue Tracking: Git, Gitea, GitLab

Web Development: Full-stack development, web-based UI design

.NET Framework, .NET Core

Networking: TCP/IP communication, OPC

Data Analytics: Business intelligence (Metabase, PowerBI)

Observability: Prometheus, Grafana

Specific Responsibilities: One or more of the following

Develop & Debug: Design, code, and test software modules for desktop/web applications, database systems, multithreaded/multiprocess applications, and network communication.

System Configuration: Configure Windows Servers and databases for testing and deployment.

Quality Assurance: Execute and document comprehensive test cases to ensure system reliability.

Infrastructure Support: Assist in maintaining and administering development tools and infrastructure.

Data Analysis & Visualization: Collect, process, analyze, and present data to support project decisions.

Documentation: Create clear and concise technical documentation for knowledge sharing.

Learning & Growth:

Receive in-depth training on software engineering principles, DevOps practices, data analytics techniques.

Become proficient on the use of industry-standard tools and gain valuable domain specific knowledge in process automation in the metals industry

Work closely with a dedicated mentor who will provide personalized guidance and support throughout your .
