Director of Operations and Health & Safety

at an independent school in

Boston, Massachusetts. The Director of Operations provides strategic leadership and oversight of the school’s daily operations, ensuring seamless functionality and full compliance with Massachusetts regulatory requirements and Nord Anglia Education (NAE) standards. This role is pivotal in fostering a culture of operational excellence and maintaining the highest levels of health and safety across the school community. Duties & Responsibilities: Take primary responsibility for all aspects of operational management, health and safety, and premises access to ensure the smooth day-to-day functioning of the school. Lead the timely and effective execution of operational priorities identified during weekly Leadership and Management Meetings (LMM) with the Principal. Oversee the daily management of the school premises through effective line management of the Premises Manager, including documented daily walkthroughs. Provide direct line management to key operational staff, including Front Desk Administrative Assistants and the School Nurse, to drive continuous improvement and operational efficiency. Produce timely, accurate, and insightful management reports for the Principal, Senior Leadership Team (SLT), and Regional Management as required. Maintain and manage the school’s operational and facilities calendars via SharePoint. Oversee the scheduling, booking, and maintenance of shared school spaces such as the Rainbow Hall and Conference Room. Lead the planning and execution of school events, ensuring effective coordination of diaries, premises access, resources, and communications. Manage critical parent communications related to premises, health and safety, safeguarding, and emergency protocols. Lead the coordination and execution of emergency communications and response procedures. Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive health and safety programs. Schedule and coordinate safety training sessions, drills, and awareness campaigns. Conduct regular risk assessments and ensure compliance with OSHA and other regulatory standards. Maintain detailed records of safety inspections, incidents, and corrective actions Serve as the primary contact for all health and safety-related inquiries and communications. Prepare and present reports on safety performance, trends, and incident analysis. Facilitate safety committee meetings and document discussions and action items. Respond to workplace incidents and near-misses promptly and professionally. Conduct thorough investigations and document findings. • Recommend and follow up on corrective and preventive actions. Stay informed on current health and safety regulations and industry best practices. Recommend updates and improvements to existing safety policies and procedures. • Conduct employee feedback surveys and use results to enhance the safety culture Education & Experience: Minimum 5–7 years of experience in school operations, facilities management, and health and safety leadership. Proven experience managing cross-functional teams and overseeing large-scale operational projects. Experience in developing and implementing health and safety policies in a school or similar environment. Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations related to school safety and operations. Proven experience in a health and safety role, preferably in a similar industry. Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and other relevant safety standards. Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities with attention to detail.
