Job Description Description: JOB SUMMARY
This is skilled automotive and equipment mechanical work approaching the journeyman level. An employee in this class is responsible for performing skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of automotive and specialized mechanical equipment. The employee is responsible for inspecting tires on vehicles, making tire repairs, and installing new tires and wheels when necessary. Other job duties include performing tire rotations, balancing, and other maintenance. Employees will always follow all safety protocols when working in the shop. We pride ourselves in providing excellent customer service, so you must be friendly, attentive, and responsive to our customers and ensure they get the tires that work best for their vehicles. The work is assigned by means of verbal and written orders and is carried out independently by the employee in accordance with standard practices of the trade.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (examples, not all inclusive)
Repairs and services tires for automobiles, trucks, tractors, power mowers, and other motorized equipment. Drives trucks; makes road service calls; and tows in disabled automobiles, trucks, and tractors if unable to make road repairs. Preforms preventative maintenance service and inspections on a variety of city owned vehicles and equipment. May make minor welding repairs and may use spray paint to touch up weld repair work. Operates various shop equipment including hydraulic jacks, air and electric powered tools, bench grinders and brake lathes. May welding equipment operate including acetylene torches, arc welders and MIG welding machines. Does all other mechanical work in accordance with quality standards and practices of the trade for gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
Requirements: QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience:
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Must have a valid drivers license. Extensive knowledge of tire patterns and material composition Minor experience with servicing and repairing vehicles and equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough working knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools, and equipment, of the automotive mechanic trade. Knowledge of the principles and mechanics of all types of internal combustion engines and motorized equipment. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of trade. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of trade. Ability to diagnose and repair defects in powered equipment. Basic computer skills Ability to keep simple records. Ability to order parts for repairs Ability to interpret and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific problems. Ability to operate various powered equipment. Ability to lift heavy objects Ability to work in a crouched or standing position for extended periods. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public. Ability to use a variety of hand tools including air and electric powered wrenches, drills, and other standard tools and equipment of the mechanic’s trade. Ability to recognize and correct potential sources of hazardous material spills. Must be “team-oriented”.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS
Physical Demands: Employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to hold or feel, reach with hands and arms, walk, talk, smell and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, sit, climb, balance, stoop, crouch and crawl. Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Employees regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and has a risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment may be loud.
Mental Demands: A lube and tire technician mental demands primarily include the need for focused attention to detail, good hand and eye coordination, the ability to follow instructions precisely, quick decision making in routine situations, basic mechanical understanding, and effective customer service skills, while also managing the physical demands of repetitive tasks and being on your feet for extended periods and lifting heavy weighted objects such as heavy duty tires.
WORKING CONDITIONS A tire/lube technician, typically works in a physically demanding environment, often standing for long periods, bending, crouching, and lifting heavy tires while performing routine maintenance tasks like tire rotations, balancing, pressure checks, oil changes, and fluid level inspections, usually in a fast paced setting with a focus on turnaround times; they may also encounter varying weather conditions depending on the shop’s setup.
