Purpose of Position
Collects Laboratory Specimens via phlebotomy, performs EKGs. Enters patient demographic information and laboratory orders into the laboratory information system (LIS) following established standards and practices.
Description
1. Provides good customer service as the front line support staff for the laboratory. Communicates professionally and confidentially with patients, clients and staff members.
2. Greets and successfully collects blood samples from patients, including infants, using venipuncture and capillary techniques.
3. Administers proper amount of glucose for glucose/lactose tolerance testing.
4. Verbally instructs patients regarding collection of samples at home, e.g., stools and 24 hour urines. Assists patients collecting specimens on site as necessary.
5. Completely and accurately registers patient demographic information into the hospital information system, verifying that all insurance and patient information is current and scanned.
6. Transfers physicians' orders for lab work into the LIS accurately and on the correct patient account, both for specimen collected on site and delivered.
7. Researches unusual test requests using available resources such as Mayo Link.
8. Ensure that patients sign insurance waivers (ABN's) when appropriate and communicates this information to billing via the Hospital information system.
9. Ensure that required forms accompany the specimens, such as consent forms/questionnaires.
10. Utilizes the Hospital's information system to retrieve Medical Record forms.
11. Maintains accurate and current orders for a large number of recurring patients.
12. Has knowledge of specimen requirements so that specimens can be collected during Laboratory Information System down time.
13. Performs electrocardiograms, accurately placing leads and obtaining printouts to be read by physicians.
14. Communicates with clients and physicians via telephone or fax to ensure proper specimen identity, correct patient information and supporting diagnoses. Informs Clinical Laboratory of changes in patients' orders.
15. Faxes or calls patients' results to clinician as required.
16. Handles and resolves specimen problems. Informs supervisor, if necessary, for resolution.
17. Keeps phlebotomy areas well stocked.
18. Responsible for daily maintenance and safety of drawing area, including but not limited to cleaning workbenches and drawing chairs.
19. Helps collect blood specimens on FH nursing units as requested.
20. Demonstrates the use of universal precautions, understands the OSHA blood-borne pathogen standards.
21. Orients and/or trains other FH staff members and students.
22. Collects data for quality assurance.
23. Works as a team member with the entire staff and with related laboratories, performing other related tasks as directed by supervisor.

Qualifications
• Six months of phlebotomy experience or successful completion of phlebotomy course (required)
• Successful completion of Medical Terminology I or pass FH's Medical Terminology test with a score of 80% or better (required).
• Ability to type at least 30 WPM (required).
• High school diploma or equivalent. (required)
• Proficiency in EKG required within 3 months of hire.
• Basic Life Support certification (BLS) within 6 months of hire (required)
