Solid Waste Equipment Operator – Public Works

About This Position
Solid Waste Equipment Operators operate solid waste collection trucks and other heavy equipment used for collecting refuse, recycling, and other waste material.
Duties
- Perform daily CDL pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections including 7‑step air brake check.
- Read and understand collection route maps and follow designated route.
- Use GPS system.
- Operate a two‑way radio.
- Data entry into on‑board computer system.
- Clean waste buildup on equipment.
- Identify needed equipment repairs and make necessary adjustments.
- Perform light manual labor, provide customer service, and meet performance standards.
Work is performed in extreme weather and environmental conditions.
Transfer station assignments use semi‑tractor trailers with full air brakes, 5th‑wheel connection, and GVW over 34,000 lbs.
Ideal Candidate
- Demonstrated commercial driving experience for at least 12 months.
- Ability to safely maneuver a large truck through tight spaces.
- Basic computer skills.
Salary
Pay range is $26.18 to $35.08 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of City of Phoenix Solid Waste Equipment Operator Apprenticeship or one year experience operating trucks with gross weight 26,001 lbs or more.
- Possession of appropriate commercial driver license (CDL) at time of hire (Class A or B).
- Transfer station assignments require valid Class A CDL without L, Z, or O restriction.
- Pass ADOT medical examination.
- Subject to criminal background check.
- Physical capability to operate vehicles safely.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience following designated routes with multiple stops.
- Experience operating solid waste vehicle.
- Experience providing customer service.
Work And Environmental Conditions
- May work irregular hours, including shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- Work outside in various environmental extremes.
- May need to pick up and move heavy bins.
- May need to push metal front‑load bins weighing over 100 lbs.
