The Tax Senior, State and Local Tax - Unclaimed Property applies industry knowledge and experience to clients by advising on the tax implications and other accounting related matters that affect business objectives, with an emphasis on unclaimed property compliance and consulting. This is a consultative role that uses tax and/or accounting skills in project management, reconciliation, financial auditing, internal controls, process/system enhancements, and related activities. Responsibilities
Research and problem resolution: identify complex situations, outline issues, and determine appropriate sources of research. Develop relationships with in-state and out-of-state Department of Tax (DOT)/Department of Revenue (DOR) personnel, Department of Treasury, and other agencies. Manage client engagements related to unclaimed property, including coordinating compliance, audit defense and valuations, and other consulting engagements. Present to clients and states; manage client expectations and deliverables; assist with marketing, networking and business development. Provide SALT expertise to clients in collaboration with Core Tax and Audit Partners, Directors, and Senior Managers. Unclaimed Property – Compliance
Obtain and manipulate client data for annual escheat returns; use systems such as FSI Track and BDO Global Portal for data gathering and imports. Identify exemptions/deferrals and perform reconciliations; respond to notices from state authorities; assist with due diligence letters and client payments; support exam activities. Communicate routinely with clients and UP team members. Unclaimed Property – Consulting
Draft memorandums and other documentation on escheat issues; participate in escheat planning and policy development; support internal controls. Represent clients on unclaimed property audits and voluntary disclosures; identify gift card planning opportunities; develop consultative selling strategies; engage in client interviews and onsite visits. Prepare schedules, analyze data, and develop exposure quantification models; assist with remediation and client refunds. Coordinate with UP leadership to manage engagements and CRM updates; supervise and mentor SALT staff as appropriate. Unclaimed Property – Related Software
Utilize FSI Track, tax research databases, and other software; maintain knowledge of GL systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards); contribute to technology enhancements for the UP group. Supervisory & Other Duties
May supervise day-to-day workload of SALT Experienced Associates and Associates; ensure training on relevant software. May evaluate performance and assist in goal setting; provide periodic feedback and evaluations. Other duties as required. Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Economics or Finance required. Two or more years of prior experience in tax, financial statement auditing, or forensic accounting in public accounting or in-house; required. Licenses, Certifications, Software & Skills
CPA, Attorney (admitted in U.S. jurisdiction), or EA preferred. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word); Power BI, Alteryx preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication; strong analytical, research, organizational skills; ability to multi-task and manage deadlines; ability to lead and develop teams; ability to interact with professionals at all levels. Compensation & Benefits
National Range: $73,500 - $131,250; Maryland Range: $73,500 - $131,250; NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $73,500 - $131,250; Washington DC Range: $73,500 - $131,250. Salary ranges are indicative and may vary by geography and qualifications. About Us
