Parish Operations Support Senior Accountant
Overview
The Archdiocese of Chicago serves more than 2.2 million Catholics in 216 parishes in Cook and Lake Counties, with more than 13,000 employees across ministries. The Parish Operations Support Senior Accountant supports parish financial reporting and standardization efforts, guiding best practices and processing complex non-recurring transactions across parishes and schools. This role supports the Director of Parish Operations Support and related teams on accounting transactions, training, and enhancements to financial standardization using QuickBooks Online and related tools. Responsibilities
Perform on-site Financial and HR best practices reviews with parishes and schools, including written summaries for stakeholders and the Vicariate Team. Prepare and process complex financial transactions affecting parishes and schools (e.g., prior year adjustments, debt adjustments, property sales). Collaborate with teams on understanding parish and school financial reporting for long-term planning and analysis. Assist parishes and schools in preparing annual reports and budget submissions, ensuring data accuracy and providing guidance. Communicate with pastors and parish/school business leaders about financial reporting and support. Contribute to ongoing management of the Chart of Accounts and Class Codes. General
Serve as an expert for QuickBooks Online inquiries for parishes, schools, and internal teams. Participate in team and organizational meetings; support internal controls. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local taxes. Utilize Archdiocesan Best Practices; support parishes and schools and recommend improvements as related to policy and procedures. Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Parish Operations Support; review and supervise staff as assigned. Job Requirements
Undergraduate degree or equivalent professional experience. Minimum five years in an Accounting or Finance role within a parish or similar entity. Knowledge of full accounting cycle requirements and principles. Understanding and alignment with Catholic Church teaching, mission and values. Ability to work independently and communicate progress across stakeholders. Advanced knowledge of QuickBooks Online. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel. Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal, multi-tasking, and organizational skills. Ability to work in a team environment with a service mindset. Ability to identify opportunities for improvement and implement recommendations. Confidentiality and trustworthiness; willingness to travel to other Archdiocesan locations and attend evening or weekend meetings as needed. The Archdiocese of Chicago offers a comprehensive total rewards package including competitive compensation and benefits. Salary range: $76,238.41 - $90,000, with placement based on education, qualifications, experience, skills, location, and organizational needs.
