Principal Substation Engineer (Seattle/Portland/Boise) Base pay range: $155,600.00/yr - $204,000.00/yr. This role sits on-site at one of the following office locations: Seattle, WA; Portland, OR; or Boise, ID. Responsibilities
Work closely with regional and global Transmission & Distribution (T&D) delivery teams to support utility/developer clients and operations teams as the energy transition portfolio expands. Interface with utility/developer clients on the development of Substation design deliverables for utility upgrades, including greenfield/brownfield projects, AIS/GIS substations, offshore wind facilities, and developer interconnection facilities. Apply experience in the design of utility transmission and distribution systems to deliver technically sound substations and related facilities. Provide engineering overview, expertise, and direction as an independent technical advisor representing owner’s interests, including acting as Owner’s Consultant/Owner’s Engineer (OC/OE) as needed. Mentor team members across North America and globally within Jacobs Global Integrated Delivery (GID); collaborate with cross-functional teams to support sales, proposal preparation, and high-quality delivery of services. Engage with professional societies (IEEE, PES, and related organizations) and participate in industry conferences and events to promote company services and stay updated on industry innovations. Qualifications
Master’s degree in electrical engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, or related engineering discipline. Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) within the United States. Minimum 12 years of direct Substation design experience with a utility or consulting organization. Advanced knowledge of high voltage substation components (Transformers, Circuit Breakers, Disconnect Switches, Circuit Switchers, Capacitor Banks, Station Service Transformers, Reactors, Rigid Bus, GIS, switchgear buildings, control houses, underground cable potheads, etc.). Experience in development of substation designs from conceptual through IFC drawings, including general arrangement, conduit and trench plans, grounding plans, BOM, conduit schedules, and construction details. Familiarity with grounding system design and lighting and lightning protection for substations. Ability to perform substation AC/DC station service calculations and studies, voltage drop calculations. Experience with vendor specifications for related equipment (control house/switchgear building, construction/commissioning specs). Demonstrated ability to perform QA/QC of design calculations, construction drawings, and specifications. Familiarity with CAD platforms such as Autodesk or Bentley products. Experience as an owner’s representative is strongly preferred. Ability to scope projects, prepare task orders, perform design reviews, and verify owner compliance. Ability to perform field visits and provide engineering support during construction. Willingness to mentor junior staff and develop training modules; help set up processes for the group. Strong communication and technical writing skills; effective teamwork and presentation abilities. Benefits and Additional Information
